Research Assistant, Reconstructing Spring

Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.
**Position Overview**:
The employee will, under supervision, participate in research projects dealing with tree rings. The position involves taking high-quality digital images of individual tree rings using image analysis software (NIS-Elements, WinCELL, etc.). After image acquisition, image retouching with Adobe Photoshop may be needed to eliminate artifacts and anomalies. At last the position involves measuring the dimension of various cell types, tree-ring dimensions, and compiling data using WinCELL software.
**Duties**:
- Prepare equipment and materials for research, keeping work space in good condition and reporting issues to supervisor.
- Assist in data collection and data entry, taking digital images of tree rings, correcting images, measuring cells using image analysis techniques/software, measuring tree-ring width.
- Monitor and document research status and findings, keeping track of tasks completed and in progress so supervisor can regularly assess quality of data generated.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned, and general tasks related to tree-ring analysis
**Qualifications**:
- Experience in dendrochronology and image analysis of tree rings constitute an important asset.
- Knowledge of wood anatomy is also an asset
- Know how to use digital camera and to produce high-quality images, and possess the ability to draw (correct images) with a pen tablet.
- Have experience using software such as NIS-Elements, Adobe Photoshop, WinCELL and Excel.
- Ability to observe fine details and identify cell types.
- Ability to detect and correct image defects.
- Ability to work with a pen-tablet.
- Ability to work independently at times.
- Ability to read instruction manuals and to learn new techniques.
- Ability to relate well to others.
- Ability to report problems/issues to supervisor when they occur.
- Ability to stay concentrated for long hours when using microscope, digital camera or computer.
**Condition(s) of Employment**:
- **Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.**
The period of work will be from **November 20, 2023 - February 10, 2024 **and the estimated total hours of work will be** 168-336 hours (28 hours a week, on a Monday - Thursday schedule).**
