**Caretaker, Heavy Duty II**
**Permanent Full-Time Position**
The Alberta Teachers' Association, as the professional organization of teachers, promotes and advances public education, safeguards standards of professional practice and serves as the advocate for its members.
Reporting to the Building Supervisor, in collaboration with Building staff, helps to ensure that Barnett House is a clean, safe and secure work environment. The incumbent maintains the building’s heating, air conditioning, ventilation and other systems; takes care of equipment; helps plumbers and other tradespeople in making repairs; and undertakes groundskeeping duties. Specific responsibilities include:
- Helping to maintain the building’s mechanical, heating, air-conditioning, ventilation, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, lighting and distribution systems.
- Performing scheduled preventive and general maintenance on the mechanical and electrical systems, the boilers, and the associated heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment.
- Ensuring that all maintenance and repairs are undertaken in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, guidelines, standards, policies, procedures and practices.
- Carrying out minor carpentry projects, wall touch-ups and flooring repairs.
- Cleaning and maintaining Barnett House and surrounding grounds as assigned.
- Removing snow using a shovel and snow equipment.
- Operating the Skid Steer loader.
- Setting up and cleaning meeting rooms.
- Moving heavy furniture, equipment and supplies and hanging pictures on walls.
- Helping to maintain tools and equipment.
- Cleaning and maintaining floors, carpets and rugs.
- Cleaning and maintaining washrooms, the janitors’ room and the boiler room.
- Opening and locking entry doors and setting alarms.
- Setting up and operating audiovisual system and equipment.
- Managing the inventory of keys and keeping a list of staff who have been assigned keys.
- Reporting, recording and responding to safety concerns and emergencies; and
- Acting as a security presence as required.
**Qualifications**:
- Valid Fifth Class Power Engineering certificate from the Alberta Boilers Safety Association.
- Certification in the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
- A Class 5 driver’s licence.
- Skid Steer certification is an asset and will be required once employment begins.
- Two years of experience handling the operation and maintenance of a large building.
- Knowledge of and the ability to maintain and repair mechanical, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems and related equipment.
- Good customer-service, communications, interpersonal, problem-solving, organizational and time-management skills.
- Competence using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
- The ability to follow safe work procedures and to work with limited supervision
- A working knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products and equipment; and
- Knowledge of carpet and upholstery care is an asset.
**Salary**:This position offers a competitive starting salary of $49,808 to a maximum of $61,915 (after 3 years) plus a full range of employer-paid benefits.
**Hours of Work**:0600-1330, 35hours per week, Monday to Friday.
