**Location - **Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton. This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person.

**Working for the Department**

The Faculty of Native Studies (FNS), one of the largest Indigenous studies academic units in the world, is devoted to understanding the historical and contemporary relationships between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous societies in Canada, with reference to the evolving Indigenous societies and cultures locally, nationally and internationally. The Faculty graduates Indigenous and non-Indigenous students with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Native Studies and offers a Master of Arts in Native Studies and a PhD in Indigenous Studies. The Faculty also offers three Certificate Programs.

The FNS welcomes on average 200 students each year. Situated within a research-intensive university, the FNS’ research of profile centres Indigenous knowledge and relationships with Indigenous communities and is open to a highly diverse range of theoretical perspectives. The complexity of the FNS is evident in its approach to Indigenous perspectives and Indigenous knowledge, the contribution of Elders, its interaction with Indigenous communities and the promotion of Indigenous languages.

**Position**

Light Fires: Indigenous Prison Arts and Education Project is an arts-based research and teaching project in the Faculty of Native Studies that serves incarcerated and formerly incarcerated Indigenous peoples.

Light Fires has three interwoven commitments: arts-based education in prisons; critical Indigenous prison studies research; and advocacy with and for incarcerated people.

Reporting to the Director of the Light Fires: Indigenous Prison Arts and Education Project, the Project Coordinator’s core responsibilities include the day-to-day administration and coordination of the Light Fires project. The project is community-driven, and values collaborative co-creative spaces, where all Light Firesmembers can come together to plan, develop, and strengthen the current and future state of the project.

**Duties**

This role will be responsible to:

- Day-to-day administration of the project: through scheduling, tracking expenses and budgets, communicating with internal and external stakeholders, filling out administrative paperwork, purchasing supplies for project initiatives, etc.
- Support Arts-Based Education in Prisons: through opportunities to co-facilitate arts-based educational programming, co-creating new lesson plan ideas, facilitation techniques, and facilitator training for our programming, and being the main point of contact for our educational programming.
- Supporting ongoing advocacy for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people: through the development of a working group to develop strategies around holistic and accessible supports for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated learners.

**Qualifications**
- Undergraduate degree in Indigenous Studies, Indigenous Education, or closely related field
- Experience and knowledge working with Indigenous communities and cultures
- Ability to enter correctional institutions (exceptions will be made to prioritize formerly incarcerated applicants)
- Knowledge, relationships, and skills related to Indigenous cultural practices, arts, and pedagogy
- Knowledge, relationships, and skills related to critical prison studies, prison education, and/or arts-based education
- Experience in areas such as community building and supportive advising
- Strong organizational skills, flexibility, and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to manage change and stress and establish clear boundaries
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and some travel required
