**Description**

The **Faculty of Veterinary Medicine** is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief **Anatomy Technician **for approximately 19 months.

The Anatomy Technician is a member of the UCVM Teaching Team who reports to the Manager, Vet Med Spy Hill Ops (VMSHO) and receives day to day direction from the Senior Anatomy Technician and the Anatomy Course Coordinators (some direction may also be provided by other faculty members involved in curriculum delivery). This position also works closely with the clinical teaching technician team around clinical teaching and related activities. The position involves handling of fresh, frozen and embalmed animal cadavers, organs, and tissues (with the potential for handling of human tissue) for the purpose of preparation, preservation (including plastination), and use in the various teaching, research, and service programs of the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM).

**Summary of Key Responsibilities** (job functions include but are not limited to):

- Prepares quality anatomical resources (including animal and human plastinated specimens) for use in UCVM teaching, research, and service activities
- Procures cadaveric materials from abattoirs, veterinary practices, and other suppliers in support of UCVM teaching, research, and service activities
- Participates as needed in weekly logistics meetings of the clinical teaching technician team to help plan for the use of cadaveric animals and tissues
- Through close collaboration with responsible faculty members and the clinical teaching technician team, prepares specimens (shaving, injecting, mounting, prosecting, etc.) and delivers specimens to the required laboratory locations
- Determines disposal of cadaveric material or where appropriate, sets aside for secondary/tertiary use
- Maintains inventory levels of UCVM anatomical specimen collection and determines needs based on those levels
- Occasionally handles live domestic and farm animals (under the direction of a veterinarian with UCVM or a veterinarian with the University) to assist with euthanasia or to help with exams
- In extraordinary circumstances such as staffing shortages, may be called upon to assist with other discipline teaching lab sessions under the supervision of the lead technician or Manager, Discipline Teaching Technicians
- Where time and resources permit, prepares specimens for external organizations
- Participates in certain aspects of the plastination process under supervision
- Helps guide DVM student dissection and learning during VM320 labs

**Qualifications / Requirements**:

- An undergraduate degree or diploma in a relevant discipline is required although an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- A willingness to work with cadaveric material is a requirement
- Ability to perform physically demanding and manual work, with some heavy lifting such as large animal handling equipment
- Physical Demands, Analysis available
- A valid full Class 5 Driver License is required
- Ability to operate a truck and stock trailer when required to transfer large animals to the teaching facility as well as safely load and unload livestock into trailer is considered an asset
- Working knowledge of anatomy, or a demonstrated interest in learning such material at a level useful in a professional medical training program is an asset
- Experience in, or additional education with, embalming is also considered an asset, as is experience working with cadaveric material
- Experience in the shipping and handling of dangerous goods is an asset, as is WHMIS and bio-safety training
