**POSITION PURPOSE**
The Head of Creature Effects will provide leadership for the artists and be the facility's key point of contact for the department. The role specifically addresses the long term goals of the department and they will work to answer the question "how do we do better work, more efficiently?". They are ultimately responsible for their team.
They will lead the operation and improvement of the department. Defining the overall vision for current and future processes, and setting/maintaining department standards including; quality control, cross-show best practices, training, documentation and tool development.
The Head of Creature Effects will be the key person for developing talent, providing feedback, annual reviews and ensuring the artists grow in their careers. With the support of the Dept Production Manager and in collaboration with the Resource Manager they will work together to define the size of their team to ensure the department is cost effective, collecting relevant data to ensure the efficient running of the team.
They will actively work with the technical support teams to define, prototype and test workflows and tools to enhance the efficiency of the department and the entire pipeline. They will stay up to date on innovative technologies to keep the department on the cutting edge.
**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**
**Department Leadership**
- Provide the team with creative and technical leadership.
- Develop best practices within the department and contribute to company-wide best practices. Educate the department and the broader team in these best practices.
- Facilitate communication within the department and across all departments, collaborating with other department heads to set expectations, improve data flow, communication and processes
- Collaborating with show supervisors and Production to help the show team improve data flow, communication and processes.
- Maintain a focus on image quality across the department to ensure the highest visual standards.
- Be responsible for the generation and maintenance of all department documentation.
**Team Management (with the Department Manager)**
- Engage in the performance management process such as annual reviews, daily feedback, and mentoring.
- Advise the department manager on artist surplus or deficits to ensure a sustainable business.
- Communicate successes and challenges faced by the team to shows and to management.
- Work with leads/supervisors to help bid on assigned shows. Work with Executive Producers to bid on future shows.
- Assist department manager and Production with resourcing and show assignments for leads and artists.
- Estimate the time required for tasks and provide accurate progress reports.
- Work with the department manager to forecast potential new hire needs. Work with Image Engine’s Recruiter to interview and select members of the team.
- Work with the department manager on a daily basis to manage and schedule all of the above.
**Technical Leadership**
- Responsible for establishing, maintaining and improving upon Image Engine’s pipeline, ensuring show setup and workflows are consistent across all shows.
- Work with Dev, Workflow and Pipeline Support to solve technical challenges in the dept and across shows.
- Keeping abreast of the latest innovations and techniques, you will be the go to person to guide the future development of the department.
