Position Summary:
Reporting directly to the Vice-President, Global Engagement (VPGE), the Director, Global Engagement (DGE) plays a key role in the development of the University’s global engagement strategy and oversees the operations of the Global Engagement (GE) unit. The DGE serves as the primary point of contact with the VPGE for stakeholders across the University and externally, and represents the VPGE, as appropriate, in formal and informal meetings. The incumbent will build collaborative relationships with Faculties and other academic units, ensuring open communication and collaboration on international activities, in alignment with the objectives and priorities set by the VPGE.

Primary Responsibilities:

- Reporting to the VPGE, the DGE has administrative and managerial oversight over the GE unit, a small team of professionals. The primary responsibilities include strategy development and operations, as well as direct responsibility for budget, finance and HR management. As appropriate, the DGE represents the University and/or the VPGE on relevant committees and working groups at the national and international level.
- The DGE provides high-level strategic advice and operational support to senior leaders, including the President, VPGE, Provost, Deans of Faculties, and others, on matters pertaining to the development and advancement of academic programs and services in the international arena. This includes the performance of risk assessments for a variety of activities related to the international portfolio of the university.
- The DGE works with the VPGE on the development of the long
- and short-term strategy for the engagement of the University at an international level. To this end, the DGE is expected to lead strategic planning exercises, including wide-ranging consultations with internal (faculty, students and staff) and external (alumni, international organizations, and corporations) stakeholders.
- The DGE identifies and oversees the implementation of tactical steps to achieve the strategy led by the VPGE, explores the feasibility and develops business cases for the physical presence of McGill outside of Quebec and Canada. The DGE explores opportunities to enhance global learning experiences and internationalization on campus.
- The DGE leads the development of multi-year partner identification and engagement plans in furtherance of the University’s global engagement strategy and coordinates the implementation of this plan in collaboration with relevant units, including but not limited to Enrolment Services, Student Life and Lerning, University Advancement, and Faculties.
- The DGE oversees efforts to increase the University’s international visibility and global profile. To this effect, the DGE, in collaboration with McGill's Communications and External Relations unit, leads the development of a marketing and communications strategy tailored to international audiences, in support of the University’s global engagement vision.
- The DGE ensures that the GE unit functions as a primary point of contact for international parties wishing to engage with McGill, and maintains a comprehensive record of active Memoranda of Understanding, service delivery contracts, international programs. The DGE ensures the stewardship of existing relationships with international partners.
- The DGE oversees the planning, execution and follow-up of international missions undertaken by the University’s executive leadership for the purposes of University representation and partnership development, and oversees the preparation, organization and follow-up of visits to McGill by representatives of other institutions and governments.
- The DGE develops a University-level business plan and business processes to define and direct the development of international programs and initiatives. The DGE canvasses and leverages national and international funding opportunities for the benefit of the mobility of students and researchers. The DGE leverages international fora for the visibility of McGill on the global stage as host and destination for undergraduate and graduate training and as a research collaborative partner. The DGE implements an internal communications and support structure to ensure that Faculties and other units are informed of opportunities and initiatives.

- English spoken and written at advanced level
- French intermediate level
- Knowledge of the international higher education arena
- Excellent communication skills
- Demonstrated management and leadership skills
- Demonstrated experience with strategy development and/or project management
- Knowledge of the process of academic program development
- Proven success with business plan development in a higher education environment
- Experience with diplomatic and consular services
- Lived experience outside of North America
