Telephone Claims Adjuster

Portage Mutual Insurance, a trusted property and casualty insurer located in Bedford, Nova Scotia is seeking an adaptable and conscientious individual to join the team. You will have the option to work in a flexible work environment (remote, in-office or hybrid) and will be an integral part of the team.

As a Telephone Claims Representative, you will use remote investigation techniques to gather details of insurance claims, secure statements, review estimates, negotiate settlements and work closely with both customers and service providers to bring claims to a resolution.

**Primary Responsibilities**
- Review new losses and prepare investigation plan.
- Contact the insured to discuss loss details.
- Explain claims process in a clear and concise manner to the policyholder to ensure efficient claims experience.
- Secure recorded statements with policyholders, third parties, independent witnesses and any other stakeholder as necessary
- Secure photographs of losses, diagrams, etc.
- Collect evidence to preserve subrogation as necessary.
- Engage experts (engineers, appraisers, etc.) as needed to assist in determining facts
- Evaluate liability and identify subrogation opportunities.
- Identify subrogation opportunities.
- Identify salvage opportunities.
- Obtain official reports - police, fire and medical providers.

**Required Skills**:

- High school diploma required
- Chartered Insurance Professional designation or willingness to work towards designation required
- Minimum of one-year experience in the insurance industry, service industry or transferable technical position (construction, automobile repair, agriculture)
- Demonstrated skills with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team environment
- Must work well with brokers, vendors, policyholders and coworkers
- Must display a courteous and professional manner at all times
