The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention has three main objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by United Nations Environment Programme. This post is located in the Convention on Biological Diversity, Office of the Executive Secretary (OES). Under the overall supervision of the Executive Secretary and the direct supervision of the Deputy Executive Secretary, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
**Responsibilities**:
I. Provides editorial services:
a) Edits complex or politically sensitive material, normally without revision, to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice.
b) Carries out more extensive editing where required, including rewriting, abridging and restructuring texts for greater readability and better logical sequence.
c) Consults with author departments and carries out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors.
d) Acts as head of team, organizing its work, determining and enforcing deadlines and providing guidance to its members.
e) Draws up guidelines for editors and in determining desk-top publishing standards and practices.
f) Serves as focal point for issues relating to information technology; provides advice to staff and management on the use of information technology.
g) Programmes daily and long-term editing work.
h) Trains junior or short-term editors and revises their work.
i) Assists staff of substantive units with the drafting of documentation and provides advice on matters concerning editorial policy and practice.

II. Manages Editorial and Translation Services:
a) Supervises the provision of editorial, translation and other documentation services for all meetings organized by the Secretariat of the Convention of Biological Diversity (SCBD).
b) Initiates and oversees the preparation and finalization of documents and information papers for submission to the CBD Conference of the Parties as well as other meetings and conferences, and, upon the request of the Executive Secretary, takes the lead in following up on decisions emanating from these meetings.
c) Oversees the distribution of in-session documents.
d) Makes suggestions concerning the recruitment of temporary assistance staff to cope with extra workloads, peak periods and emergency situations.
e) Participates, as required, in the Management Committee of the Secretariat and ensures follow-up to relevant decisions taken.

III. Oversees the production of the books of decisions of the Conference of the Parties:
a) Coordinates the production of the book, which is produced in the six official languages of the United Nations.
b) Works closely with the CBD Knowledge Management Officer and the Public Information Officer.
c) Acts as English proofreader.
d) Secures the services of in-house proofreaders for the other languages.
e) Interacts with the printer as necessary.
f) supervising the proofreaders and consulting translators as necessary.

IV. Performs other related duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree in environmental, social or political sciences, business administration, environmental management or equivalent is required. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Must have passed the United Nations competitive examination for English editors.
