ROAR Peer Coordinator Job Description

**Work Site**: Various - in Abbotsford and area
**Salary**: $25 per hour, plus mileage if required to travel for work
**Hours**: 15 hours per week including evenings and weekends - Feb to Dec. 2023

**Job Summary**:
The peer coordinator will coordinate and support the peer network (for people with lived and current living experience with substance use in Abbotsford) for projects that are part of ROAR (Reducing Overdose, Abbotsford Response). Projects include Memorial Project, Community Dialogues, International Overdose Awareness Day events, Episodic Overdose Prevention Sites; Social Media; arts-based and other education outreach initiatives. The peer coordinator works as a member of a team to identify and support peers, schedule peer attendance to ensure all shifts are covered, offer support and training to peers, and promote adherence to COVID-19 guidelines including hygiene, social distancing and personal protection equipment guidelines, and other related duties.

**Responsibilities**:

- Work with peers and community partners to identify network members.
- Assist with peer recruitment, training, and support.
- Scheduling of the peer rosters and ensure each shift for the projects is covered.
- Find a replacement for shifts that cannot be covered, and be willing to take their spot.
- Assist with the distribution of peer stipends.
- Assist with art making activities.
- Support peers through active listening skills and non-judgmental attitude.
- Support peer engagement in projects by providing individualized support for each peer, including advocating for their wellbeing.
- Attend community events to increase public awareness and provide resource information about overdose response.
- Provide Naloxone and other training to peers as well as to community members.
- Order and transport food/refreshments for meetings and peer training sessions
- Provide regular updates to the CAT and regular reports as required.
- Responsible for on-going evaluation of sessions delivered throughout the project.
- Provide referrals for other services as required.

**Required Qualifications**:

- Have lived or living experience with substance use (includes being a family member/friend of someone who is using substances)
- Demonstrated understanding of the overdose crisis and issues related to substance use.
- Valid BC Driver’s License and use of a reliable vehicle.
- Ability to work flexible hours—some early mornings, evenings and weekends.
- The ability to work independently.
- Some experience with public speaking, delivering/facilitating education sessions helpful.
- Knowledge of community resources.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Have completed or willing to complete Basic First Aid.
- Have completed or willing to complete the Take Home Naloxone Train the Trainer.
- Have completed or willing to complete Food Safe Level I.

**Knowledge and Skills**:

- Friendly, personable, and motivated to support peers.
- Skilled in compassion, inclusion, and respectful relationship building.
- Able to create supportive and safe peer-led spaces that are welcoming and include Indigenous Cultural Safety practices.
- Good inter-personal skills, including comfort approaching and initiating conversation with peers, families, seniors, and service providers.
- Excellent communications skills including active listening and ability to engage in difficult and sensitive conversations in an empathetic and respectful manner.
- Working understanding of the importance of confidentiality and boundaries

**Job Types**: Part-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 11 months
Part-time hours: 15 per week

**Salary**: $25.00 per hour

Schedule:

- Day shift
- Evening shift
- Weekend availability

Ability to commute/relocate:

- Abbotsford, BC: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

Licence/Certification:

- BC Drivers License and use of a reliable vehicle (required)
