**Internship Position: Community Environmental Intern**

The mission of Intervale is to conserve biodiversity, interpret heritage, and promote the integrity of rural livelihoods. Intervale takes a community-based approach to conserving fish, wildlife, and species at risk such that both wildlife and people can benefit. Intervale works collaboratively with communities, Indigenous groups, other non-profit organizations, federal and provincial governments, small businesses, schools, youth groups, colleges, and universities.

This position will engage with communities and community members on selected projects, particularly the Limestone Landscapes Priority Place. The position will offer municipal leaders, fish harvesters, teachers, and other citizens of small, coastal communities a variety of opportunities to engage in activities aimed at conserving terrestrial and aquatic species at risk as well as their habitats. Opportunities offered will include training and education to observe shorebirds, identify plants, monitor changes in terrestrial animals, reduce plastic waste, and adopt best practices to avoid disturbances or harm to Limestone Landscapes. The position will help towns and harbours promote the beauty, biodiversity, and culture of the region so as to assert pride as responsible stewards. Using tools of dialogue, participation, and collaboration, this position will strengthen positive relations among partner organizations, stakeholder groups, and communities, thereby helping to ensure that local perspectives are considered, and traditional activities are maintained.

**Activities and responsibilities will include**:

- Coordinating community events, community interviews and engagements.
- Ensuring consistent project outreach to communities in a manner that is accessible and understandable.
- Facilitating citizens to engage collaboratively in project-related dialogue and action and working to ensure that the needs and aspirations of community members are heard.
- Gauging local knowledge and needs; work with Intervale and partners to suggest modifications based on findings.
- Assisting the Intervale Stewardship Biologist with presentations to schools, town councils, and stakeholder groups.
- Support aquatic species at risk and invasive species projects that directly impact rural communities on the Northern Peninsula.
- Participate in field work activities such as habitat restoration, shoreline cleanups and other activities as needed.

**Position is for 12 weeks starting on June 3rd, 2024**

**Rate of pay: $19.00/hr for 35 hours per week**

**Qualifications**
- Strong work ethic, attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
- Computer proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, and virtual meeting software
- Knowledge of coordinating community engagement, presentations or events will be considered an asset
- Post-secondary in an environmental or an education related field considered an asset
- Community relations experience
- Superior verbal and written communications skills, fluency in English
- Ability to manage priorities and balance workload
- Outgoing personality
- Experience creating social media or knowledge of public relations and promotion

**Additional Considerations**
- Access to own laptop and home office with internet is required
- Access to a vehicle with proper insurance is necessary for the position. Travel will be reimbursed when required to travel for work purposes.
