**Aboriginal Head Start Program Early Childhood Educator (2 Positions)**
- The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS) is a non-profit charitable organization serving the Urban Aboriginal community with a mandate to provide programs and services that will contribute to the cultural, educational, social, economic, and recreational development of Urban Aboriginal people. The Society manages twenty-three programs and services through three locations in Vancouver. The Friendship Centre at 1607 East Hastings is a community-led organization creating meaningful change for the Urban Aboriginal Population that we serve. VAFCS is currently seeking an individual connected with Indigenous community, highly organized, and self-motivated to work with us_

**Position Summary**

The Aboriginal Head Start Early Childhood Educator (AHS ECE) will be a core member of the VAFCS Aboriginal Head Start team and will work under the direction of the VAFCS Aboriginal Head Start Coordinator and collaboratively with all members of the AHS team. The AHSECE is responsible for providing culturally appropriate, nurturing care and support to young children in keeping with the vision, goals, mandate, objectives, and policies of the VAFCS and Aboriginal Head Start Association of B.C. The role of the AHSECE includes program planning and development, working directly with child and families, working with community members, and maintaining a neat, orderly, stimulating environment.

**Position Description**
- Ensure the Early Childhood Education program meets all requirements of the

Child Care Licensing Regulations on a daily basis.
- Develop and implement child-care programs that support and promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children.
- Plan and maintain an environment that protects the health, security and well-being of children.
- Assess the abilities, interests and needs of children and discuss progress or challenges with parents and other staff members.
- Observe children and provide written reports to expand play and plan activities that recognize individual differences and new developmental achievement.
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with co-workers and community service providers working with children.
- Work with AHS staff and other specialists (when applicable) to plan, carry out and review individual program plans.
- Observe children for signs of potential learning or behavioural problems and prepare reports for parents, guardians or supervisor.
- Guide and assist with children’s physical needs for eating, sleeping and toileting.
- Facilitate a respectful conflict resolution process when dealing with difficult staff and parent/guardian issues.
- May supervise and coordinate activities of other early childhood educators and early childhood educator assistants.

**Qualifications**:
Minimum Valid ECE Certificate (License to Practice in BC)

**Experience**:

- Experience working with teams, including with children, parents, staff and volunteers.
- Understanding of social, economic, and political issues affecting Aboriginal communities
- Firsthand knowledge of Aboriginal philosophies and values of varied cultures and traditions
- Firsthand knowledge of the lived Aboriginal experience and how culture influences the development of individuals and communities.
- Comprehensive understanding of BC’s Child Care Licensing Regulations
- Demonstrated goal setting, critical thinking, problem solving and organizational skills.
- Ability to comply with policies and procedures regarding privacy, confidentiality, record-keeping, and reporting.

**Requirements**:

- Experience in a licensed Child Care Setting: 2 years
- Valid ECE Assistant certificate and registration number
- Successful completion of a police information with check vulnerable sector screening
- Compliance with VAFCS COVID-19 Vaccination Policy
- BC Government Employees Union Membership
- Must have a valid BC Driver’s License
- Valid Emergency Child Care First Aid with CPR/AED Certification or equivalent
- Cover Letter, Resume and 2 professional employment related references.
- One character reference

Employment Type: Full Time

Hours Per Week: 37.5

Working Hours: 7.5 hr. shift between 7:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Type of Child Care: Licensed Full-time Aboriginal Head Start 3 - 5-year-olds.

Position Start: TBD and (2) positions available

Paid Time Off: 15 days of paid vacation, 13 statutory holidays, and 18 sick days annually

**Position is open until filled.**
