Research Lab Technician, Aabijijiwan New Media Lab

**This is a term position until December 2025**

**Responsibilities**:

- Leads set up, monitoring, and maintenance of media lab equipment (including but not limited to: desktop computers, laptops, iPads, virtual and augmented reality equipment, 3D printers, 3D, scanners, laser cutters, Smart Boards, other audiovisual equipment, and associated software).
- Performs troubleshooting, documents issues and develops plans for routine maintenance, repair, and/or replacement.
- Analyzes lab requirements, prototypes, iterates, and tests new systems or system modifications.
- Provides input into hardware and software purchasing and budgeting decisions.
- Provides on-site support and leadership for lab workshops, presentations, and events.
- Creates technical documentation and guides.
- Provides on-site training and assistance on equipment use and maintenance.
- Supports lab networks and related systems environment by: installing and upgrading as well as providing directory and account management, configuring and administering network devices, documentation and end user support in network administration and maintenance of networks.
- Keeps specialist knowledge up-to-date on relevant techniques, strategies, and best practices.
- Works within the timeline and budget framework provided.

**Qualifications**:

- Professional or undergraduate degree, or institutional diploma from a recognized institution in Computer and Information Systems or a related discipline (Master’s degree preferred) plus 1-3 years of directly related experience.
- Experience working in high pressured situations within the public and events.
- Artistic and creative knowledge for working with artists, students and children.
- Experience working with Indigenous, marginalized and racialized communities an asset.
- Experience with and/or interest in emergent and new technologies an asset.
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills with the ability to instruct and/or explain detailed technical procedures and ideas to University faculty, staff, students and prepare technical reports.
- Ability to analyze and assess user needs, evaluate effectiveness of solutions and resolve problems.
- Ability to exercise sound independent judgement, initiative and resourcefulness.
- Ability to plan, organize, establish schedules and deadlines for work processes and other employees while maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and other University staff in a team environment.
- Ability to relate courteously with all faculty/instructors/presenters, staff, students and the public.

**An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.**

**Condition(s) of Employment**:

- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- May be required to lift and move apparatus in excess of 15 kg.
