Status: Permanent Full Time

The **FIRE MARSHAL** maintains responsibility for providing leadership and coordination of all aspects of fire safety, prevention and related emergency preparedness programs across the respective sites of UHN.

**The principal responsibilities include**:

- Develops and implements educational programs based on staff and environmental needs related to fire safety, prevention and related emergency preparedness
- Develops and monitors quality improvement/risk management programs and performance measures/ indicators related to fire safety and prevention, identifying issues/trends and developing action plans to address and ensure compliance with codes and standards.
- Identifying issues/trends and developing action plans to address and ensure compliance with UHN and Ontario fire codes and standards
- Responding to all fire alarms and Code Browns within the hospital
- Performs operational/strategic planning and implementation responsibilities:

- Developing and monitoring the annual operating (budget) plans
- Testing and maintaining fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems and all life safety systems, as per the Ontario Fire Code
- Daily, weekly, monthly and semi-annual inspections, in accordance with the O.F.C
- Acting as a liaison with Toronto Fire Services and other authorities having jurisdiction
- Performs corporate management functions
- Participates in educational programs, in-service meetings and Hospital committees
- Advises senior management on status of services, personnel matters, program implementation, etc

**Requirements**:

- At minimum, completion of a 2 year community college program in Fire Protection Technology, Fire and Emergency Services or recognized equivalent;
- At minimum, completion of NFPA, certified fire inspector level 1 course or recognized equivalent standard;
- Maintains membership/affiliation with applicable organizations - e.g., Canadian Fire Safety Association, National Fire Protection Association, Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, Canadian Association of Fire Investigators;
- At minimum, completion of a public education course or equivalent standard;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of maintaining multiple communication channels;
- Ability to read and interpret blue prints;
- Ability to implement sustainable/beneficial change;
- Ability to coordinate many activities concurrently;
- Ability to handle emergency and/or crisis situations effectively and efficiently;
- Demonstrate and maintain a working knowledge of Hospital accreditation requirements, Industry standards and codes (Fire & Building Codes), Hospital policies and procedures, Workplace Hazardous Material Information Systems and Occupational Health & Safety Act;
- Ability to present to various sized groups at different levels within the Organization;
- Computer literate;
- Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance to UHN standards;
- Exercise initiative and good judgment with ability to multi-task;
- Compliance with confidentiality requirements;
- Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
- Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or departmental policies;
- Client service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand;
- Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.
