**Surgical Skills Lab Instructor**:
**Primary Purpose**: This position will provide direct instruction, supervision, and support to the various professional health science students, primarily Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical students as well as Dental and Nurse Practitioner students specifically for the acquisition of surgical procedural skills based on the learning objectives of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate curricula’s. Working collaboratively with various faculty, they will facilitate the expansion and growth of the surgical skills lab and procedural skills curriculum and promote acquisition of procedural skills, experiential learning and deliberate practice principles to the students. Provide leadership, work closely with a Surgical Skills Clinical Learning technician in support, and maintain the Surgical Skills Lab equipment and environment.

**Nature of Work**: This position will report to the Director of Surgical Skills and Simulation, Department of Surgery. This position is responsible for the delivery and promotion of hands-on surgical skills educational experiences as well as inter-professional opportunities for health science students. The position will primarily work collaboratively with the College of Medicine faculty as well as other Professional Health Science faculty to develop and deliver Surgical Skills instructional content, demonstrate and supervise procedures in a laboratory setting using animal/human tissue and/or partial task trainers and utilizing moulage to enhance educational experiences. This position will provide leadership in the area of experiential learning and motor skills instruction. The work will involve interactions with internal and external partners to promote, plan and implement learning opportunities within the lab. This position may experience constant interruptions, changing priorities, strict deadlines, multiple competing demands, addressing multiple complex issues, and moderate/heavy physical labor. This is a full time day position that may require some flexibility in hours and occasional weekend and evening work.

**Type of work/Accountabilities**:

- In all interactions, effectively represent the College of Medicine and Department of Surgery with strong professional etiquette; utilize sound judgement, confidentiality and discretion in handling sensitive issues.
- Interact collaboratively with senior leaders within the College, Dean’s office staff, senior administrators, other campus units and other organizations from outside the University.
- Ensure curricula priorities and deadlines are met.
- Provide research, analysis and leadership support for all projects within the portfolio.
- Assist with the development and implementation of policies, procedures and practice standards consistent with best practice for a Surgical Skills Lab.
- Support faculty in the development and implementation of simulated surgical educational activities (Surgical virtual reality simulators, suturing, boot camps, etc.) These will include various suturing techniques, surgical instrumentation, and sterile technique based on the learning objectives of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate curricula’s.
- Work closely with the Undergraduate Education Coordinators and Administrators from the College of Medicine and Department of Surgery. Maintain a close working relationship with the Department of Surgery to develop and support surgical based training programs.
- Work closely with department staff for financial operations.
- Provide reports to all constituents as required.
- Provide direction and expertise to various groups, including student interest groups.
- To provide assistance, information, resources and research support as requested.
- Develop and deliver Continuing Education Workshops for Nurse Practitioners and others in concert with Continuing Education and Development for Nurses (CEDN).
- Surgical Model development and moulage as needed.
- Participate on related committees as required
- Liaise with various surgical vendors to acquire their support toward the long-term development goals of the Surgical Skills Lab.
- Pursue CE opportunities to stay relevant and to meet criteria to maintain any association standing.
- Other duties as assigned

**Qualifications**

**Education**:A Medical Degree with surgical experience is preferred; MD, DMD, DVM, RNFA, NP or Veterinary Technician would be considered.

**Experience**: A minimum of 3-5 years of surgical and procedural experience is required. Experience with teaching, health education delivery and experiential learning is an asset.

**Skills**:
Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in basic surgical skills and principles of aseptic technique, performance competencies in leadership/vision, support for progress, relationship building, communication, results orientation, and personal effectiveness; be comfortable teaching and transferring of skills to learners in various formats -one-on-one, small groups, or larger, workshop
