**Lead Hand - Special Projects**

Kalawood Industries Ltd. is a small custom woodworking shop located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Specializing in custom woodworking of all types, with particular emphasis on the manufacture of staircases, handrails, custom stair components, wood doors, and bespoke woodworking, Kalawood Industries has positioned itself as a leader in the specialty woodworking industry within Saskatoon and Saskatchewan. We are looking for an experienced woodworker with a positive and professional approach to join our team.

In this permanent full-time position, you will work with the Production Manager as part of the Special Projects Team working in the Production Department. The primary role is the manufacturing of custom products and the delivery of special services in collaboration with the Project Manager and Production Team. These projects can be staircases, interior or exterior doors, furniture, or anything made out of wood, typically being of a one-off design.

The nature of these projects means that both in shop fabrication and on site installation work will be required. The Lead Hand - Special Projects must by necessity have a broad range of experience and abilities, an expert knowledge of all aspects of woodworking, and the ability to improvise, and make decisions without compromising quality. You have a keen eye for design and enjoy the craft, always looking to learn, grow, and expand your skill set. It is expected that you can work independently, or when required by size of project or time constraints, in cooperation with members of the Special Projects Team or the Production Team as assigned to them by the Production Manager.

When not engaged in the manufacture of special projects, the Lead Hand - Special Projects is helpful to the members of the Production Team in the regular work of a small shop.

The Lead Hand - Special Projects reports to the Project Manager and coordinates and cooperates with the Production manager. Experience in this position should be viewed as a prerequisite for advancement to the Project Manager position.

Your duties include:

- Working with the Project Manager to determine time and material requirements
- Reading, understanding, interpreting, and creating design drawings and specifications
- Tracking time, materials, and regular financial costs of a project, including coordinating necessary purchases with the Production Manager, and ensuring that job specific goals and targets are met
- Being adaptable and demonstrating an ability to learn new skills and take direction, while at the same time being able to effectively communicate and teach your specific areas of expertise, thus raising the general knowledge and skill level of the entire team
- Coordinating with the Production Manager, if necessary, to delegate project tasks based on team members’ individual strengths, skills, and experience
- Organizing projects, setting timelines, and managing workload in order to set and meet deadlines
- Being familiar with and ensuring that safety procedures are followed in your area, along with performing risk management
- Maintaining quality control, ensuring that the work is done to the highest standards
- Assessing project performance and identifying areas for improvement, along with suggesting improvements
- Problem solving, developing new techniques, identifying problems, and suggesting solutions
- Setting an example for other employees in regards to safe work practices and the implementation of goals, policies, and procedures set by management
- Maintaining a clean and organized work environment

Specific qualifications and skills that the Lead Hand - Special Projects will possess are:

- A degree of computer literacy, including the use of CAD software (particularly Sketchup) and spreadsheets
- A complete knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and woodworking machinery and tooling, including the making of jigs and calibration of machinery, as well as the use of wood finishes and finishing techniques
- Must be physically fit and able to lift heavy objects

The Lead Hand - Special Projects is expected to use your extensive experience and skill in order to bring about the successful execution of large or complex projects in a timely and cost effective manner. You are affable and enjoy daily interaction with your coworkers.

Salary is commensurate with experience. A grade 12 or equivalent education is required.

**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $28.00-$34.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
