The Lajoie laboratory undertakes research to understand how gene expression is regulated during stress using yeast as a model organism, including the fungal pathogen Candida albicans. To do this, their lab employs yeast genetics, biochemical and fluorescence imaging approaches as well as next generation sequencing technologies.
**Responsibilities**:
The Research Technician will perform and record the results of experiments with limited supervision to support research to understand the contribution of stress response pathway, including the unfolded protein response (UPR) in the yeast antifungal resistance. The role will make recommendations for, and assist with determining, the optimal protocols and equipment for use in the conduct of experiments, in collaboration with the Principal Investigator. The Research Technician will participate in the compilation, analysis and presentation of results for dissemination and will work in collaboration to support the effective operation of the laboratory, train and oversee students, order supplies, and ensure safety standards are met. The role will also support research through assisting with the operation, installation, modification, troubleshooting and servicing of equipment and instrumentation.
**Qualifications**:
- Education:
- 3 year College Diploma in Biosciences or relevant area of focus
- Experience:
- 5 years of experience working in a cell biology research intensive laboratory environment and experience in yeast genetics
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of medical sciences and related fields of study, including yeast genetics
- Familiarity with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis, including yeast growth assays
- Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and analyses
- Familiarity with techniques for updating, managing and extracting data from a research database
- Familiarity with preventative maintenance techniques and practices
- Communication skills with an ability to complete detailed analytics and reports
- Verbal and written communication skills with an ability to document technical information and concise procedural documentation
- Attention to detail with an ability to retrieve, analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of data, while ensuring that information is accurate and comprehensive
- Ability to follow formal processes and protocols with high attention to detail
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
- Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) including spreadsheet design, work processing and database management
- Demonstrated ability take initiative, to work independently and follow through on work assignments
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
- Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
- Ability to identify key results from research and to summarize and draft reports on research findings
