The Robarts Research Institute within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University has a mission to accelerate medical discovery. Through a powerful integration of basic and clinical research, we are driving major advances that impact on many of today's most devastating diseases.

The mission of Dr. Brown's research is to understand the relationship between a history of concussions and the later development of dementia. The laboratory addresses this issue using transgenic mice carrying human versions of genes known to be critical to neurodegeneration in a mouse model of concussion.

**Responsibilities**:
The Research Technician will perform and record the results of experiments using established protocols, under the direction of a Principal Investigator, assisting them to achieve their research outcome to determine the relationship between concussion and later development of dementia. The role will maintain mouse breeding colonies, conduct of experiments, including carrying out histological examinations, touchscreen and cognitive testing, PCR and genotyping, and participate in the compilation, analysis and presentation of results for dissemination. The role will work in collaboration to support the effective operation of the laboratory, provide support to students and trainees, and ensure safety standards are met. The Research Technician will report any physical or behavioral abnormalities, and will complete and maintain documentation and records related to animal care and procedures ensuring that animals are cared for according to Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) and American College of Veterinary Services (ACVS) guidelines.

**Qualifications**:
**Education**:

- 4 year University Bachelor's Degree in Neuroscience or relevant area of focus
- Master’s Degree preferred

**Experience**:

- 2 years of experience working with transgenic mice in a research-intensive laboratory environment
- Experience in behavioural analysis of rodents and with immunochemistry
- Experience using touchscreen tasks of cognition

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Familiarity with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis
- Familiarity with techniques for updating, managing and extracting data from a research database
- Knowledge of CCAC guidelines and policies of the Western Animal Use Subcommittee
- Knowledge of behavioural analysis in mice, familiarity with animal handling and animal “normals” for mouse species with the ability to recognize and report animal health issues
- Communication skills with an ability to complete detailed analytics and reports
- Verbal and written communication skills with an ability to document technical information
- Attention to detail with an ability to retrieve, analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of data, while ensuring that information is accurate and comprehensive
- Ability to follow formal processes and protocols with high attention to detail
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
- Demonstrated ability take initiative, to work independently and follow through on work assignments
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
- Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
- Ability to identify key results from research and to summarize and draft reports on research findings
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
- Familiarity with University policies and procedures related to research preferred
