- 5 years recent experience in clinical/bedside nursing or laboratory microbiology, combined with 2 years experience in the practice of Infection Control, preferably in a hospital setting.
- Registration with appropriate Health Professions College in good standing.
- Computer proficiency for window based programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Hospital Information Systems (HIS).
- Knowledge and understanding of infection control and microbiology, immunology, epidemiology and statistical analysis.
- Demonstrated leadership in clinical practice and adult learning.
- Good attendance.

**ACCOUNTABILITIES (Major Responsibilities of the Position)**
- To lead the maintenance of and ongoing evaluation of the hospital-wide infection control program in accordance with current standards of regulatory agencies and government directives.
- Maintenance of hand hygiene program across the organization.
- To conduct necessary monitoring and analysis of data for the purpose of identifying, reporting and making recommendations related to Infection Control issues.
- Works to ensure patient safety under all circumstances.
- Monitors admissions and microbiology data for recognition of infections, epidemiologically important organisms, sentinel events, environmental risks and/or communicable diseases for immediate review and investigation.
- Reviews patients charts for supporting evidence related to infections, communicable disease and clusters/outbreaks of infections or unusual occurrences.
- Investigates problems and provides timely, evidence-based recommendations and reports.
- Attend patient rounds to meet with staff and identify patients at risk for health care-acquired infections.
- Collects and disseminates to the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit, information on designated reportable diseases.
- Investigates and immediately directs any staff/patient/visitor intervention necessary to prevent transmission of infection (e.g. SARS, TB etc)
- Provides on-going education to staff as necessary to ensure appropriate infection control policies are being adhered to as well as developing education material for patient/visitor teaching regarding infection control issues.
- To lead the day-to-day administration and development of the infection control program and special assignments.
