Reporting to the Manager, Emergency Department the EMS Offload Assistant is responsible for patient assessment in collaboration, when necessary, with other multidisciplinary team members. The EMS Offload Assistant is responsible for the implementation of Emergency Department primary care and initiation of treatments under local medical directives and related polices.

The EMS Offload Assistant adheres to the philosophy, policies, procedures and standards of the hospital and the Emergency Department, and complies with all safety procedures on safe working techniques and reports any unsafe conditions to the Manager.

The EMS Offload Assistant also demonstrates professionalism and participates in Quality Improvement activities of the department, complies with the Occupational Health and Safety standards for the hospital and is proactive in promoting a safe work environment.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Obtains detailed patient medical history, monitors vital signs, performs ECG exam and monitors for cardiac arrhythmias or other abnormalities and takes appropriate action in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
- Provides support to clinical medical team and utilizes medical devices and therapy protocols in the treatment of patients.
- Supports the Physicians and Nurses with the coordination of the flow of patients as directed
- Records, and reports to physician or nurse the patient's condition or injury, the treatment and discuss plan of care
- Performing other duties and assignments as required.

- Ability to de-escalate conflict and involve leadership appropriately
- Demonstrated effective problem solving/critical thinking
- Effective interpersonal communication (interdepartmental, patient/family)
- Commitment to patient focus and family centered care.
- Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Completion of a Community College Diploma in Primary Care Paramedics - **required**:

- Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistants (A-EMCA) Certificate - **required**:

- Minimum 1 year of recent experience as a Primary Care Paramedic or equivalent patient clinical care experience - **required**:

- Standard First Aid and CPR BLS and AED certification - **required**:

- EKG interpretation - preferred
- Demonstrated Intravenous Proficiency - preferred
- Familiar with current paramedic standards and practices
- Ability to communicate in French language an asset
- Opportunities for retired Paramedics will also be considered
- French Language proficiency an asset.
