The Student Financial Services department within the Registrar’s Office is recruiting for a Financial Aid Advisor to work as a part of their team. The Financial Aid Advisor interprets OSAP Policy, processes OSAP supporting documents and appeals, and provides client support to students.

**Responsibilities**:

- Assists with front-line customer service, responding to telephone, written, in-person and electronic inquiries
- Provides budget planning and money management guidance for students as well as information regarding award, scholarship, and bursary opportunities
- Troubleshoots problems with the National Student Loan Centre (NSLSC)
- Offers advice on Government Repayment Assistance Programs (RAP) to ensure students do not default on student loans
- Manages an assigned portfolio of various funding programs under the OSAP purview and/or ministry processes that support OSAP eligibility
- Provides direction and support to front-line staff and internal stakeholders
- Responsible for the administration of reviews, assessments, determining eligibility, and administering the various ministry processes for full-time and part-time OSAP funding
- Interprets policy, and processes OSAP appeals, ensuring compliance with Ministry guidelines
- Determines which appeals must be sent to the Ministry and prepares the appeal on behalf of the student
- Advises students with unique or complex financial or family situations and recommends other financial aid options as appropriate
- Ensures appropriate documentation is collected for individual appeals
- Liaises with the Ministry and other organizations in support of students, MCU Student Financial Assistance Branch, National Student Loan Service Centre, Social Services offices, other post-secondary institutions, etc.
- Serves on financial aid committees and is a Ministry contact for student issues
- Reviews student accounts and refund reports to determine the amount of tuition refund that must be returned to the NSCLSC
- Liaises with the Student Fees area and Finance on complex cases
- Makes adjustments to the OSAP system for students who have withdrawn or reduced their course load

Qualifications:

- Two-year Diploma in Business Administration or Social Sciences
- Three years of experience advising students or clients, including two years of direct experience working with OSAP, other financial aid programs, or other social assistance programs including eligibility criteria or case management
- Experience dealing with sensitive and confidential information and understanding of FIPPA legislation
- Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to comply with ministry policies, procedures, legislation, and guidelines (e.g., Ontario Works, Family Support Act, Ontario Disability Support Program, immigration, employment insurance, Ontario Student Assistance Program)
- Demonstrated communication skills and customer service excellence
- Documentation skills
- Creative problem-solving skills to resolve a range of complex problems and to develop and recommend solutions to address student financial needs and budgeting concerns
- Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to interpret legislation and to accurately respond to a student’s concern
- Ability to communicate and explain information to students whose first language is not English, students with disabilities, and students at high risk of academic failure
- Able to handle stressful situations and work well under pressure
- Ability to prioritize and organize workload
- Comfortable working both independently and in a team environment
- Ability to interpret and explain complex policies and procedures
