**The Biobank of Predictive Biomarkers in Genitourinary (GU) Cancers**

The Biobank of Predictive Biomarkers in Genitourinary (GU) Cancers has collected thousands of liquid biopsies per year from GU cancer patients since its inception in 2016. Under the supervision of Dr. Gang Wang, Pathologist and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia, the biobank will be expanded to biobank archival tissue biospecimens.

**Position Summary**

The Laboratory Research Assistant carries out the efficient daily operation of the GU tumor bank, requesting biospecimens, processing received biospecimens, maintaining biospecimen database, performing various histology and immunohistochemistry protocols and providing support to the tumor bank director. **A start date of April 3rd, 2023 or sooner is preferred.**

**Responsibilities**
- Work with the tumor bank director to ensure adequate updating and organization of protocols related to research studies and the overall organization of the tumor bank.
- Request the tissue slides/blocks from the original hospitals, keep tracking of the requisitions, processing the received slides/blocks, and ensure samples are collected and processed, labeled, stored and cataloged appropriately.
- Handle sample requests, retrieve requested samples and prepare sample inventories/data reports as needed, prepare samples for shipping and receiving as needed per protocols.
- Perform H&E and immunohistochemical (IHC)staining of tissue samples.
- Maintain the Laboratory Information Management System (LMIS).
- Maintain necessary biobank supplies, service records and prepare invoices for services.
- Operate broad scope of laboratory equipment and ensure laboratory equipment is kept in clean and working order. Perform basic maintenance as required.
- Other duties as assigned.

**Qualifications and Experience**
- Minimum BSc. in relevant scientific field, such as biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or molecular biology.
- Relevant laboratory and research experience in histology and immunohistochemistry is preferred.
- Experience in laboratory/biobank management is preferred, including experience with LIMS (e.g. OpenSpecimen) and REDCap databases.
- Demonstrated knowledge of research laboratory best practices and techniques.
- Willing and able to complete all required safety training, both at point of hire and on an ongoing basis.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently both in a team environment and independently.
- Excellent organizational and record keeping skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Reliable, motivated, and detail-oriented.

**Salary**

Starting salary range for this position is **$45,904 - $51,293 per annum, plus benefits.** Salaries are dependent on level of experience.
