**Working for the Department**

The Department of Cell Biology delivers comprehensive BSc, MSc and PhD educational programs with a focus on training the next generation of scientists and related health professionals. These programs are integrated with a group of research laboratories led by internationally recognized scientists driving new insight into the causes and effects of human disease, and how these might be treated in the future.

The Department of Medical Genetics, through integration of clinical care, education, and basic research, is striving to translate these medical genetics advances into improved health for Canadians. The department consists of an exceptional and dedicated group of scientists, clinicians, technical and support staff, and trainees who have come together with a shared vision of increasing the understanding of the causes and consequences of genetic disease, in improving diagnosis and patient care, and in educating other professionals and the public about medical genetics.

The Department of Pharmacology is an integral part of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. We are proud of the excellence of our scientific research and our deep commitment to undergraduate and graduate education.

Established in 1914, the Department of Physiology is dedicated to exploring the intricate workings of living systems through studying the biological and chemical processes governing their functions. We are an internationally renowned teaching and research-intensive department ranked 21st amongst Physiology Departments worldwide (QS World University Research Rankings 2022).

**Duties**

Reporting to the Academic Department Manager, and working collaboratively with the Administrative Supervisor and the Chairs of the departments of Cell Biology, Medical Genetics, Pharmacology and Physiology, the Scientific Educator will play a key role in supporting various community educational efforts of four academic departments within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. This position will be responsible for organizing numerous seminars, lectureships, professional development rounds, research events, student orientation activities, and developing and disseminating scientific papers and internal education initiatives. The incumbent will also ensure proper dissemination of all information related to these activities. The Scientific Educator will also support the development of dissemination strategies to reach the scientific communities and potential students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, attracting and engaging with potential students, ultimately contributing to the growth and success of the departments' student enrollment efforts.

One of the key roles of the incumbent will be to translate research outcomes and concepts in cell biology, medical genetics, pharmacology and physiology into engaging, accessible content for general public attending seminars and lectureships. This position requires an understanding of scientific principles, excellent communication skills, and a knack for simplifying complex ideas without sacrificing accuracy. The Scientific Educator will play a crucial role in educating and inspiring potential students, the scientific community and the general public about the fascinating world of human medical sciences.

The position will also be responsible for carrying out the various administrative and logistics duties related to popularization, event planning and organization.
