**The Role**

The Nature Interpreter for School, Youth, Birthday Party, Exhibit and Drop-in Visitor Programs, is a casual part-time contract position with the number of hours based on the needs of program bookings. This contract extends to September 2, 2024, with possibility for renewal. Shifts are available weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

**Position Description**

We are searching for enthusiastic and approachable interpreters who are passionate about connecting people with nature, horticulture, and environmental sustainability content through engaging programming. RBG interpreters deliver programs to a wide range of audiences via different program types and styles. Throughout the year, Nature Interpreters will deliver programs to organized groups such as school and youth groups. Pre-booked family and early-years programs as well as birthday parties are common.

As part of our events, exhibits, and garden admission, RBG interpreters will also lead drop-in visitor programs such as Discovery Stations, interpretive tours and shows to a variety of target audiences from toddlers to seniors.

**Responsibilities**
- Deliver captivating experiential environmental education and interpretive programming to a range of audiences in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings
- Collaborate with other RBG team members to manage risk, coordinate program delivery, and provide feedback to improve program design and delivery
- Provide excellent customer service and engage visitors during programs and all other interactions with RBG visitors
- Communicate promptly and clearly with other interpretive staff and administrators both in and out of program
- Ensure proper upkeep of program materials and completion of administrative duties as required
- Arrive and depart according to agreed-upon timelines and shifts Other duties as requested

**Requirements**:

- Exceptional oral and written communication and presentation skills
- University or college graduate or student in natural or environmental sciences, education, museum studies, science communication, horticulture or other related field (or possess equivalent experience)
- Experience working with children and the public preferably delivering interpretive and/or educational programs
- Enthusiastic, approachable, empathetic and people-oriented demeanor
- Good time management skills to adhere to program schedules
- Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and to excellence in visitor experience
- Must be able to walk 2-4 km over hilly, uneven terrain in all seasons and weather conditions
- Able to handle various live animals including (but not limited to) turtles, snakes, spiders, and insects.

**Additional Assets**
- Fluency in French or other language ability at a level suitable for public presentations and teaching a strong asset
- Ontario Teachers College certification, or other formal certification or training in education is a strong asset
- Formal training in natural heritage interpretation (such as Interpretive Specialist certificate or Certified Interpretive Guide) or outdoor and environmental education
- Artistic skills (painting, sketching, photography, etc.) at a level suitable for public presentations and teaching
- Additional certifications relevant to outdoor education (ORCKA, low ropes, leadership, etc.) Familiarity with the natural history and identification of Ontario’s flora and fauna
