**A day in the life**

We’re looking for a kind, responsible and hardworking kitchen assistant with a passion for cooking: someone who not only aspires to be a chef, but also wants to make a positive difference in the world.

You’ll create 5-day menus that you’ll change every month for our 70 students. Every day will include a morning snack, a hot lunch, and an afternoon snack.

We aren’t looking for someone to serve anonymously from a back room. Our kitchen is open, and you’ll be a visible, integral part of our community. You’ll be looked to for broad leadership in food and open mindedness - what you do in the kitchen will extend into the classroom. A job well done will result in high esteem and vocal appreciation from our close-knit community.

You’ll be working alongside not only our amazing Red Seal Level 3 chef, but also a team of fantastic educators and administrators - all of whom are striving to help each other become our best selves.

During your workday you can expect to:

- help with food prep (including chopping and washing vegetables, baking snacks and portioning out the students' meals)
- collect used dishes and utensils from classrooms and rinse them
- load and unload commercial dishwashing machine
- wash specific items by hand (e.g. wooden cutting boards, large pots)
- dry and store clean dishes, glasses and equipment appropriately
- maintain cleaning supplies stock (e.g. detergents) and notify supervisor when necessary
- check washing machines' operation and promptly report any technical/performance issues
- help plate and serve food (you should expect to interact with the students and answer any questions they may have about the food they are eating)
- help maintain general kitchen cleanliness as part of our FoodSafe compliance

During July, you will take over responsibility for the kitchen, as our chef will be away on vacation. Your hours will increase to 7.30am - 3.30pm, and will involve menu planning and purchase of food on a daily basis. Your pay during this month will be increased to reflect your additional hours and responsibilities.

**What you’ll need**:

- Culinary degree or certification
- Food Safe Certification (Level 1)
- Previous experience working in a commercial kitchen setting (an asset)
- Ability to follow instructions and help with various tasks, as needed
- Time management skills
- Attention to detail and sanitation rules
- Driving License
- Bachelor’s degree (an asset)
- You will need to provide proof that you are legally allowed to work in Canada and will be required to go through a criminal record check
- Must enjoy being around kids
