About the Organization

Job Summary

The Data Manager provides operational management and supervision of the data team at the VEC. This is a senior staff member who collaborates with VEC researchers, staff, students and trainees to help ensure that data activities run smoothly and are well integrated with the field, lab and finance teams.

Organizational Status

The Data Manager reports to the Senior Data Manager, to the Director of the VEC, and to the investigators affiliated with the VEC, as applicable.

Work Performed

The main responsibilities of the Data Manager include the following:

- Oversees the day-to-day coordination of the data team while adjusting schedules to reflect changes and priorities within the VEC.
- Develops data budgets in conjunction with financial administrators and study investigators.
- Ensures the data team meets its budget for each study while recommending and implementing cost-saving measures.
- Standardizes and optimizes data management across the VEC.
- Provides expertise on technical requirements for study databases in order to meet regulatory guidelines and international standards for data capture, security, and output, including but not limited to, ICH-GCPs, FDA 21CFR Part 11 GCDMPs, SDTM, CDISC and CDASH.
- Provides technical expertise in clinical data management practises for the comparison and evaluation of systems.
- Anticipates and analyzes trends in technology and assesses the impact of emerging technologies to support growth at the VEC.
- Develops and implements VEC and data management Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensures they are being adhered to.
- Collaborates with VEC researchers to understand and anticipate project needs of the data team.
- Develops strategies, operating plans, and performance targets for the data team and leads the day-to-day delivery of its activities.
- Develops, mentors, and manages data team staff including interviewing, training, performance management, and professional development guidance.
- Manages performance concerns and disciplinary action in collaboration with HR, Senior Data Manager, and VEC Director.
- Performs other duties as required

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The incumbent exercises data management judgement (including non-routine) and is accountable for their own directed actions. They make judgements as to how decisions fit with acceptable Good Clinical Data Management Practices and what the impact of the decision will be. Errors in judgement can result in significant damage to the VEC’s academic reputation as a centre of excellence, nationally and internationally.

Supervision Received

The Data Manager receives direct supervision from the Senior Data Manager as well as general supervision from the Director of the VEC and VEC investigators in regards to long-term strategic goals.

Supervision Given

The Data Manager provides direct oversight of the data team, which includes data coordinators, programmers, statisticians, research assistants, and students. This includes assigning and monitoring the work of the data coordinators, training staff, and participating in job evaluation/performance measures. They work with the statisticians to coordinate the flow and priority setting of the data and the analysis. The Data manager works with the field and lab administrators and programmers to ensure the efficient flow of study data from those teams to the data team and to coordinate workload of data research assistant staff. The study-related day-to-day workflow of the data research assistants is supervised by study data coordinators, who report to the Data Manager.

This position has the option of hybrid work. Regular attendance onsite is required for the purpose of effectively supervising data team staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong leadership skills and demonstrated ability to effectively manage a team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with cross-functional teams
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of data quality
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
