**Job Description**:
Reporting to the President & CEO, some of the key responsibilities include:

- Advises and leads the organization in decision making on which files to appeal, in alignment with Legal Aid Alberta’s goals and priorities.
- Develop criteria and rationale on what constitutes an appeal, with reference to existing case law, legislation, impact on clients, LAA services, and Albertans at large.
- Advise on criminal, family and immigration matters as appropriate in consultation with legal aid lawyers in related areas.
- As an Ambassador for Legal Aid Alberta, speak as an expert on appeals cases and advise on strategy when files may impact justice system partners as well as media and public.
- Build, develop and maintain relationships with judiciary, justice system partners, staff and roster as appropriate.
- Act as a mentor to legal aid lawyers and include staff lawyers in appellate matters as appropriate in order to enhance staff lawyer excellence in criminal matters.
- Advise on legal aid criminal practice, policy and procedures as required.
- Develop a criminal appellate strategy that incorporates the needs of legal aid clients and Legal Aid Alberta.
- Represents Legal Aid Alberta and/or clients in court, including Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada
- Files and serves criminal notice of appeal, order transcripts, file and serve transcript and appeal record, perform legal research and perform all other matters relevant to the appeal, prepare, file and serve factum, and perform other related duties.
- Attends conferences, seminars, meetings, and training events relevant to the area of expertise; keeps abreast of legal changes and participates in professional organizations.

**Qualifications**:
**Education and Experience**:

- Law degree from a recognized law school.
- Membership in the Law Society of Alberta.
- Minimum of 8 years experience in criminal and appellate law.
- Proven track record of legal advocacy in a busy work environment.
- Experience in identifying and mitigating legal risks.

**Knowledge and Skills**:

- Commensurate with education, experience and role expectations.
- Criminal law matters and appeals
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage with a range of different audiences.
- Seasoned legal advisor able to provide sound, practical, solution-based legal advice that aligns with the objectives of the organization.
- Able to work within a diverse team environment with colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders to achieve excellent results.
- Able to stimulate strategic thinking and planning processes to guide the organization’s commitment to its vision, mission and values.
