This is an exciting time for the primary urgent and emergency service, as the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) is seeking to recruit faculty in small animal emergency and critical care, whose scope of work would include working with and playing a foundational role in supporting and leading the primary emergency service.
Operating from 8am-10pm, Monday-Sunday, this service provides patient triage and emergency care coverage for clients and in support of veterinary clinics across Prince Edward Island. This service is part of the clinical teaching program in the VTH and emergency clinicians will provide clinical teaching to fourth year DVM students in urgent care and emergency medicine.
We are seeking a primary care veterinarian to join the team working within the AVC-VTH Small Animal Primary Care Urgent and Emergency service, in a 0.5 FTE part-time term position until April 30, 2025, with the possibility of extension.
**Responsibilities and Requirements**:
- To provide clinical service in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, including while working with, overseeing and evaluating final year DVM students as part of the clinical year teaching program elective rotation in emergency medicine.
- To provide leadership in the management of the emergency service while on shift including providing guidance and coordination to technical/support staff and overseeing interns with primary care urgent/emergency cases.
- To work efficiently to TRIAGE, assess, and treat all urgent and emergency service cases to a high standard of primary care level medicine, including diagnostics and basic emergency procedures.
- To work and communicate effectively with clients and referral services within the VTH to ensure smooth, efficient transfer of specialty referral level cases.
- To ensure that all medical records are promptly completed, and written discharge communications are promptly provided to the client (and their regular veterinarian, where relevant).
- To ensure that clients (i) are given accurate estimates, provide informed consent and a deposit is received prior to hospitalization, diagnostics and treatments and (ii) are given regular estimate/billing updates and (iii) that billing is completed accurately prior to discharge and that payment is received.
- To provide clear, thorough and professional communication for case management with clients, colleagues and island veterinarians.
- To ensure that the client has received adequate communication at discharge to know the next steps for monitoring, at-home care (treatments), and follow-up.
- Initiative, adaptability and flexibility to work within an academic, specialty referral setting, and to efficiently and effectively manage the unpredictable caseload associated with urgent and emergency medicine.
- Interest and commitment to ongoing development of emergency medicine skills, knowledge and techniques in a specialty teaching hospital setting.
- Willingness to work in a rotating shift schedule including days, swing, late and weekend shifts to provide urgent and emergency veterinary care.
- Willingness to work statutory holidays and university closures (including storm closures) to provide urgent and emergency veterinary care.
- Willingness to participate in on-call duties to oversee the hospital's primary emergency service inpatients, and if needed, to respond to overnight VTH client primary emergency presentations (following triage).
**Qualifications**:
- Graduation from an accredited veterinary college resulting in DVM
