**Job purpose**

Reporting to the Program Manager and working closely with the Women and Family Services Team, the Advocate is accountable to create a safe and supportive environment for women and families impacted by violence and abuse to seek help.

Using a feminist, trauma-informed framework, the Advocate will work within shelter and in community to promote safety, provide advocacy, education and resources to support a woman and her family navigating systems related to violence and abuse, homelessness, poverty, addiction and/or mental health.

At WRRC, we believe a woman is creative, resourceful and whole; the Advocate will work with a woman to co-actively develop a care plan that is central to her experience at WRRC. The care plan is fluid and evolving, addressing her unique needs in crisis, prioritizing risk assessment and safety planning, progressing through her healing journey to support her growth and development towards a healthy and fulfilling life. As the lead on a care plan, the Advocate will enroll both WRRC team members and broader community services to support a woman as she takes up leadership in her own life.

**Key Responsibilities**

In a manner consistent with the agency’s values and aligned with the agency’s vision and purposes, the WFSA will:
**1. Safety and Shelter**
a. Ensure a physically safe environment by monitoring security cameras, conducting regular security checks, completing risk assessments, reviewing safety procedures, enforcing shelter rules and guidelines, assessing and addressing safety concerns. b. Ensure a psychologically safe environment for residents by being respectfully accessible to women, ensuring confidentiality of information in accordance with agency policies, addressing and resolving emotionally unsafe situations in a women
- centered manner. c. Managing the shelter environment by monitoring supplies including groceries, ensuring cleanliness and good repair and assisting in controlling agency costs.

**2. Support and Advocacy**
a. Complete program intake sessions and strength based assessments for women seeking services at WRRC. Enhance women’s capacity to make informed choices by working with women accessing WRRC services (Shelter, Help-Line, or walk-in) through active listening, identifying strengths, and reviewing options. b. Conduct risk and needs assessment, develop safety plans, provide abuse education, offer information and referrals, provide advocacy, assess appropriateness for shelter stay and/or develop connect women and children with WRRC and/or community services.

c. Determine the nature of needs identified by women and children accessing WRRC services upon intake and throughout their relationship with WRRC. d. Provide women directed case planning services as appropriate support and advocacy as directed and requested by women and families. e. Participate in service coordination and community development to facilitate service planning and delivery. f. Maintain current knowledge of social services available throughout the community and network internally and externally to access appropriate service. g. Provide service for resident and community children engaged in programming in accordance with plans developed by the WFS’s Children’s Advocate, assisting with the evaluation of progress towards goals; by making suggestions and sharing observations with the Team. h. Maintain accurate records and complete required reports. i. Attend and participate in mandatory bi-monthly relief team meetings (6 per year). j. Identify issues and barriers inconsistent with quality, client-focused service and develop recommendations for plans to address these issues.

**3. Community Psycho-Educational Counselling**
a. Where other community counselling is not readily available, provide both individual and group counselling which may include face-to-face contact and phone appointments. This will involve conducting intakes, counselling/coaching for emotional support, self-care and psycho-education about woman abuse, tactics of abuse, impacts of abuse; ongoing risk assessment and safety planning, advocacy for internal and external services; initiating referrals; by helping the woman identify her strengths and resources and by helping her identify her choices and the consequences of those choices and by documenting this service provision. b. Within 2-3 sessions, in consultation with the woman, determine the nature of woman-identified needs, determine priorities, and determine the appropriate plan of service. c. Ensure ongoing assessment of goals and needs, and plan for termination appropriately. d. Document contacts, service provision, and disposition appropriately.

**4. Care Planning**
a. Create an individual care plan with, and for all clients, after assessing needs and exploration with client.
