**The Opportunity**
United for Literacy is seeking energetic and organized Summer Reading Tent Staff to work as a small team to plan and facilitate a series of outdoor sessions for children between ages 5 - 12 in the Lower Mainland of BC. Reading Tents aim to reduce the loss of knowledge and skills between the end of one school year and the beginning of the next. Focusing on literacy in a broad sense (reading, writing, listening, and storytelling), the staff engage children in fun and inclusive activities based on diverse learning styles and reading levels. Reading Tent sessions involve using environmental and social justice themes to engage learners in crafts, reading circles, movement-based activities, and end with participants selecting a free book to take home

Reading Tent Staff will meet regularly with community partners and the United for Literacy Community Coordinator to assess the impact and needs of the programs. This role will require working directly with children and youth outdoors and may require working directly with volunteers. United for Literacy works with a variety of program partners who each have their own COVID-19 safety protocols in place; all staff are required to adhere to United for Literacy safety guidelines and guidelines put in place by our partners.

**This role requires you to**:

- Design and deliver literacy programs and activities for children and youth across the Lower Mainland
- Conduct outreach and build relationships with children's service providers and/or summer programs/events, in under-served and high-need communities
- Schedule and coordinate reading tent/writing workshop times across the summer at various locations at multiple sites
- Plan, create, implement, and organize reading and other creative literacy activities for populations of children experiencing barriers in learning environments
- Manage project budget, including travel costs and additional materials for the duration of the summer
- Organize and store project materials for the duration of the summer; have the ability to lift, bend, and transport materials on an ongoing basis
- Collect data and create a detailed activity report at end of contract
- Additional responsibilities may include communication with and supervision of volunteers, assistance with United for Literacy's Indigenous Summer Literacy Camps Program in BC

- Space to store program materials (craft supplies and books) as needed

**Assets**:

- A valid First Aid Certificate
- Many of our learners are newcomers; speaking other languages is an asset
- Lived experience (relating to experiencing barriers in education) is an asset
- A valid BC driver’s license and access to a vehicle is an asset

**Additional Applicant Requirements**:
As this position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program, applicants must:

- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the _Immigration and Refugee Protection Act_
