Job Summary
Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Mechanical Engineering Technologist/Technician will provide infrastructure support to research projects primarily within the McDonald Institute, Department of Physics, Engineering Physics, and Astronomy, and potentially other departments at Queen’s University and partner institutions. The incumbent will be responsible for operating a highly specialized machining workshop, focusing on designing and fabricating custom high-precision scientific equipment. This role involves collaboration with researchers in diverse fields of physics, particularly in astroparticle physics projects at off-site locations such as SNOLAB. The incumbent will be involved in the manufacture, assembly, modification, repair, and potential design of parts, equipment, and devices, using a variety of manufacturing processes and equipment.
**Job Description**:
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Manufacture, modify, assemble, maintain, repair, and assist in designing scientific research devices such as vacuum systems, high-precision detectors, cryogenic systems, and mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic assemblies.
- Use various equipment such as CNC mills and lathes (Mastercam system knowledge required), 3D printers, and conventional machines (drill, lathe, milling machine, saw, router, bender, welder, etc.).
- Inspect parts using conventional metrology equipment.
- Establish machining sequences and create necessary jigs for part fabrication.
- Collaborate with researchers to understand project requirements and precision needs.
- Draw necessary diagrams using specialized 3D software.
- Advise researchers on suitable equipment, materials, and manufacturing techniques.
- Participate in the installation, repair, and maintenance of equipment in scientific laboratories.
- Maintain a clean and safe workshop environment, handling solvents, oils, and greases appropriately.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure safety in all activities.
- Handle, transport, classify, inventory, and maintain tools, instruments, and equipment.
- Stay updated on new software, equipment, and design techniques through specialized readings and training. Work independently within guidelines provided by principal investigators; perform experimental design and adapt or modify equipment/devices to meet the specific needs of the research infrastructure.
**REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS**:
- College diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
- Minimum of two years of relevant experience in CNC and conventional machining, ideally in a high-tech or research environment.
- Proficiency in using Mastercam, 3D design software, and a variety of machinery and tools for material fabrication.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and experience in welding or other specialized techniques (an asset).
- Fluent in English, with strong communication skills for effective collaboration with researchers, engineers, and technical staff.

- Make recommendations to researchers regarding the design and modification of parts or systems to optimize research outcomes.
- Determine how to address workshop safety concerns, manage inventory, and maintain equipment in working condition.
