**JOB SUMMARY**:Reporting to the Senior Research Scientist, the Epidemiologist, Administrative Data** **will support research activities related to linked administrative health data (e.g., healthcare practitioner billings, hospitalizations, vital statistics - deaths records, prescription drug data) relevant to the BC-CfE’s mandate on hepatitis C virus (HCV) and syndemic conditions. With guidance from the Senior Research Scientist and Senior Epidemiologist, this individual will leverage these administrative data linkages to improve our scientific methods as well as contribute to research and evaluation efforts. With the goal of enhancing internal capacity and improving the quality of research outputs, the Epidemiologist may liaise, support, and/or lead research projects as supported by the research program in the Epidemiology and Health program.
**JOB RESPONSIBILITIES**:
The Epidemiologist (Administrative Data
- HCV and syndemic conditions)** **will:
- Leverage existing data linkages (administrative datasets) to lead, support, and contribute to research that examines the role of Treatment as Prevention in addressing HCV and syndemic conditions in the province of BC
- Contribute to methodological and scientific development, education and training within our research group and across the Epidemiology and Population Health program
- Help define emerging research priorities for the Viral Hepatitis Research program and support securing data linkages in support of these efforts
- Investigate and document the complexities of the administrative datasets being used in BC-CfE studies (e.g., healthcare practitioner billings, hospitalizations, vital statistics - deaths records, prescription drug data)
- Create educational/training materials (e.g., compilation of information related to the structure and quality of administrative data into manuals and presentations).
- Support research staff (e.g., trainees, research assistants, coordinators, as well as research scientists and clinicians) by reviewing study protocols and resultant abstracts/manuscripts that describe outputs from administrative data analyses.
- Develop and lead research projects for first-author publication, when time and interest permits.
- Conform to the highest standards of responsible conduct in research and comply with all of the BC-CfE’s policies and procedures.
**JOB QUALIFICATIONS**:
Required:
- Master’s degree in epidemiology, population/public health (with a focus on quantitative methods), or biostatistics, supplemented by 3-5 years of recent related work experience.
- If education is directly related to administrative health data (e.g., thesis/publications using these data), such time is counted as work experience.
- Experience with administrative health data, particularly in British Columbia or Canada (e.g., Population Data BC’s holdings, particularly those provided by the BC Ministry of Health, or other provincial equivalents).
- Proven understanding of administrative data structures, including, but not limited to: ICD diagnostic codes in healthcare practitioners billing/hospitalizations data and drug identification numbers (DINs) in prescription drug data.
- Demonstrated technical skills, including database-related programming, with large linked administrative datasets.
- As demonstrated by education and/or publications, an understanding of epidemiology (e.g., study design, sampling, bias) and key analytic concepts (e.g., regression modeling, adjustment for confounding).
- Understanding of and appreciation for research ethics, confidentiality, and privacy regulations.
- Demonstrated experience in the creation of academic materials (e.g., publications, presentations).
- Effective skills in communication (written/oral) of technical concepts to diverse audiences.Attention-to-detail and enthusiasm for working collaboratively to solve complex problems.
Assets:
- Experience with coding and interpreting statistical analyses (e.g., regression models)
- Experience with statistical software (i.e., R, SAS, Stata)
- Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, infectious diseases, or related syndemic conditions
