**Working for the Faculty of Native Studies**

The Métis Archival Project (MAP) is a research group based out of the Faculty of Native Studies, University of Alberta, specializing in the digitization of Métis-related archival documents. The aim is to provide greater accessibility of archival sources and contribute to reconstructing the historical geography of the Métis Nation. To this end, MAP compiles, databases, and analyzes various archival documents, including Censuses, Hudson’s Bay Company Archives Documents, Northwest Scrip Applications, Manitoba Affidavits, and other historical records.

**Position Summary**

Broadly defined, the position demands excellence in various research skills, activities, tasks, and a capacity to work in a digital environment. Assisting the Project Principal Investigator, Dr. Frank Tough, and MAP Lab Research Associate in: data compilation, data entry, proof-reading, archival document linking and assisting PI and Research Associate in analyzing research results. The employee should be detail-oriented, capable of following instructions, and ability to identify when further assistance and training is needed and be confident in working on an Apple computer. Hard deadlines exist for deliverables to external funders.

**Duties**
- Filing and organizing physical and digital material;
- Transcribing archival documents;
- Verifying transcription of archival documents;
- Editing and enhancing digitized imagery of archival documents;
- Linking and verifying archival information.

**Minimum Qualifications**
- Graduate of a Bachelor’s program or a relevant diploma program
- Capability of working independently and being detailed-oriented is critical
- Strong computer skills, particularly with Apple computers, with basic to intermediate skills in FileMaker Pro, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word

**Preferred Qualifications**
- Ability to read cursive handwriting in English required, and the ability to read French an asset
- Experience working with archival and historical material an asset
- Experience working with Métis communities and knowledge of Métis history an asset
- Ability to read and understand maps and other data visualizations
- Understanding of issues pertaining to Métis-Crown relations is highly desirable
