**HISTORICAL INTERPRETER - ENOCH TURNER SCHOOLHOUSE**

**LOCATION: Toronto, ON**

**Position Summary**:
The Ontario Heritage Trust seeks the services of an individual (the “Interpreter”) to assist with the delivery of educational programming at the Enoch Turner Schoolhouse. In addition to leading group and school tours, the Interpreter may be asked to provide interpretation support during events. These educational tours at the Schoolhouse provides visitors with a glimpse of daily life in 19th-century Toronto, the lives of its immigrants, and an understanding of the roots of free education in Ontario.

**List of Duties**:
The Interpreter shall report to the Site Coordinator, and shall be responsible for the following:

- Setup and delivery of in-costume educational programs for field trip students
- Discussing and responding to questions on education and daily life in Victorian Toronto with special emphasis on the Corktown neighbourhood
- Contributing to the evolution of current and new educational programs

The Interpreter shall also be expected to research and have an understanding of education in Ontario, the role of the one-room schoolhouse in early modern Canada, immigration and settlement in Canada during the mid
- to late-19th century, and Victorian etiquette and pastimes.

**Business Hours**:
The Schoolhouse is operated year-round from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. The Interpreter is required on a part-time basis and will be given a schedule in advance by the Site Coordinator indicating the days and hours of work as tours and field trips are booked. The Interpreter shall operate as a fee-for-service supplier to the Trust. The Trust estimates an average of 12 hours of work per month.

**Minimum Qualifications**:

- Some completion of a postsecondary degree/diploma in a field related to: history, education, or museums
- Sound knowledge of Ontario’s history with emphasis on Victorian Toronto, early education, and immigration to Canada
- Previous experience as an interpreter in a historic house, site, museum or gallery setting
- Previous experience working with groups of children (ages 5-14)
- Excellent public speaking skills
- Punctual and attentive to detail
- Fluency in or familiarity with French is an asset

**Job Type**: Part-time
Part-time hours: 4 per week

**Salary**: $22.00 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 5 per week
