**Your Opportunity**:
We are looking for a group of dedicated individuals who are interested in an ongoing volunteer program at Conservation Halton. Our Volunteer Core members donate a **minimum of 40-hours or attend at least 10 volunteer events** (whichever is fulfilled first) during the program year (Spring - Late Fall).

The Volunteer Core supports several working groups within our organization including parks, outreach, stewardship, and restoration projects. Those who complete the minimum commitment requirement are recognized with a certificate of completion, Conservation Halton annual pass (value of $150), as well as environmental training and the expansion of skills and professional network.

Opportunities are shared via an online Volunteer Portal by CH staff. Most opportunities run on weekdays during regular working hours (9am-5pm) with some availability on weekends and evenings. Examples of our volunteer opportunities include:

- Seed collection and forest inventory
- Invasive species management
- A variety of community outreach/education events and programming
- Wetland, tree, and native species plantings
- Trail maintenance and general assistance in our parks

**Responsibilities**

Volunteers support a variety of projects. Tasks will vary in responsibility, physical demands, and activity type. See some examples below:

- Support community, school and corporate volunteer workdays and tree plantings by acting as a volunteer lead: this involves coordinating other volunteers, and providing instruction on how to plant trees, shrubs, and wildflowers
- Assist with planting by carrying, laying out, and spacing trees based on species and moisture requirements, inspecting other volunteer’s planting quality and recommending corrections where possible
- Assist with waste removal from natural sites, this includes garbage pick-ups and large debris removals
- Provide support at community outreach events, including set up and take down of event materials and representing Conservation Halton in a professional manner
- Participate in private landowner site visits with Conservation Halton stewardship staff
- Assist Conservation Halton staff with preparation of recommendations for private landowners to manage the natural features on their property
- Support Conservation Halton stewardship and restoration staff with preparation and implementation of ecosystem rehabilitation plans; for example, plantings, in-stream work & low impact development (LID) projects
- Perform duties and ensure assigned volunteers (if applicable) work in accordance with Conservation Halton’s safety policy and procedures and with the occupational health and safety act and its regulations
- Perform other duties as required to contribute to the team effort and achieve the objectives of the department and Conservation Halton

**Your Qualifications**:

- Ability to commit to a minimum of 40-hours or 10 volunteer events during the Spring through Fall months
- Keen interest in the outdoors or environmental conservation
- Experience in an environmental field is an asset, but not required
- Weekday and daytime availability an asset
- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of conditions (including challenging/uneven terrain) and to adapt to the daily challenges associated with fieldwork (insects, weather, limited access to formal restrooms, etc.)
- Able to travel to various sites not serviced by public transportation
- Basic computer skills (knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, excel)
- Ability to lift 30 lbs., stand, and walk for long periods of time

**Training Provided (will vary based on opportunity)**
- Plant/tree identification of species common in southern Ontario
- Ecological restoration techniques, including safe handling of equipment
- Proper planting techniques
- Safely wading in creeks
- Working with private landowners
- Preparing and implementing ecosystem rehabilitation plans
- Relevant health and safety policies and procedures
