- Provides professional English language tutoring in support of students’ college coursework, with the goal of helping multilingual Douglas College students develop the English language skills they need to participate more effectively in the college learning environment.**Responsibilities**
- 1. Tutor Douglas College students
- a. Use appropriate English language teaching/learning approaches to tutor multilingual Douglas College students
- b. Focus tutoring on the English language skills that students need to participate effectively in their Douglas College courses (as requested by student but also as determined by the tutors’ professional assessment and input from faculty)
- c. Base tutoring on the goal of helping students develop the skills and attitudes they need to become more effective students
- d. Manage and effectively work in one-on-one, group, and online tutoring situations
- e. Be a resource to peer-tutors who are working with students who need English language learning help
- 2. Learning Centre Operational and Administrative Services
- a. Effectively schedule, follow, and update appointment and tutoring schedules
- b. Keep regular, pedagogically useful, and accurate records of tutoring work done with students
- c. Assist student clients in a professional and welcoming manner, providing course-related help, and effectively referring students to other resources as needed
- d. Use Learning Centre and Library resources and equipment while tutoring and demonstrating resources to students, helping develop resources and presenting to groups of students.
- f. Function effectively in an environment where professionalism, confidentiality and sensitivity are of prime importance (especially with student information and course work)
- g. Work effectively within the Learning Centre team, respecting different roles and job duties of other team members, and promoting a positive work environment
- 3. Collaborate with Learning Centre Faculty
- a. Consult as needed with Learning Centre Faculty to assess language learning needs of, and appropriate pedagogical strategies to use with, multilingual students
- b. Consult as needed with Learning Centre Faculty to mentor peer tutors (student assistants) in how to help students with English language development
- c. Participate in faculty-led research activities, such as data gathering, analysis, and presentation of findings related to the scholarship of second language learning, teaching/learning, tutoring, online learning, writing centre best practices, and composition studies
- 4. Perform other duties such as:

- a. Assist with the advertising and promotion of Learning Centre services (through class visits, maintaining presence on bulletin boards, use of social media, meeting with faculty and staff in departments across the college)
- b. Assist with the development, reproduction, and maintenance of Learning Centre instructional resources (both hard-copy and online)**To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need**
- Current and recognized TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) certification (preferred), and/or successful completion of a recognized TESL training program.
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a recognized college/university
- Demonstrated background in and comfort with a broad range of post-secondary course work
- A minimum of two years’ related work experience (tutoring or teaching ESL to post-secondary students). An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Readiness to engage in on-going training and professional development, including the Learning Centre tutor training and Online Writing Tutoring training
- Participate in regular, ongoing professional development activities to stay current with best practices in post-secondary tutoring centres, English language teaching/learning, and writing centre scholarship
- Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills including written and verbal fluency in the English language
- A demonstrated ability to:

- assess students’ English Language needs (related to the students’ college coursework) and focus tutoring on students’ requested and evident learning needs (including knowledge gaps, skill weaknesses, and attitude challenges)
- tutor students using pedagogically appropriate approaches to helping students both learn and become more independent as effective college students
