JOB SUMARY:
The Child Minder is primarily responsible for providing a safe and developmentally appropriate environment for the children attending the various programs at Spirit of the Children Society. The Child Minder will be respectful of children and parents, and ensure that equipment and facility are clean, safe, and well maintained.

REPORTS TO: FDP Program Manager and Early Years Program Manager

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Promote and support traditional cultural teachings and practice for our families, agency, and community.
- Utilize the traditional Aboriginal philosophies that include: the Medicine Wheel, the Seven Sacred Teachings.
- Set the environment and implement activities to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual and social needs of the children in the program.
- The Child Minder will provide adequate equipment and activities, ensure equipment and facility are clean, well maintained and safe at all times.
- Will develop culturally appropriate programs and activities, carried out primarily in Circle Time, that honor culture and values of the Aboriginal Culture and history.
- Follow policies and procedures including acceptable disciplinary policies, and must be familiar with emergency procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma, and relevant work experience.

Food Safe and First Aid for Children

Strong knowledge of Aboriginal and urban Aboriginal culture, traditions, and history.

Knowledge and ability to teach a range of related topics, including child development, parenting strategies, anger management, and ability to do family assessments.

Excellent communication and writing skills

Current and valid Driver’s License or willing to obtain business insurance and liability coverage.

Driver’s Abstract (agency will process).

Criminal records check (agency will process).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Casual part time position at approximately 21 hours per week during the contract year from April 1 - March 31. Schedule may adjust depending on program needs. This position is dependent upon negotiated funding.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
All workers must be aware of the potential for allegations to be brought against them by clients and therefore, must conduct themselves in a manner where behaviors/actions cannot be misinterpreted. Workers are required to take precautionary measures and to follow safety guidelines to ensure their safety. Workers must be aware of the risks when working with potentially hostile or aggressive clients and follow safety guidelines to ensure their safety.

Workers must maintain confidentiality, undergo annual successful criminal record checks, and to be sensitive to diversity among clients, co-workers and the community.

This position will be exposed to a high level of noise and distractions from children. Direct delivery may include moderate physical activity involving walking, standing, bending, and lifting children. A doctor’s note deeming the individual as healthy and personality suitable for this position is a job requirement.

Pay: $20.48-$28.96 per hour

Expected hours: 4 - 20 per week
