Plessis Family Resource Centre is looking for a committed individual to support our Walking
School Bus program. The Plessis Family Resource Centre currently provides a healthy breakfast program and
Walking School bus to children in the community. This program is to assist families and children
with providing a nutritious meal and a safe and consistent means to get to school in the
mornings. Many of our families in the community face multiple barriers which prevent access to
education. The Walking School bus and breakfast program has helped increase regular
attendance at school and children are alert and ready for their day after eating a nourishing
breakfast.

**Duties and Responsibilities**
- Work as part of a team including accurate and regular communication with Resource
Centre staff.
- Establish a level of trust that enables community development and foster positive
relationships with participants.
- Walk with and provide direct supervision of approximately 12 children ages 5-12 from
Plessis Family Resource Centre located at 1190 Plessis Road to Bernie Wolfe
Elementary School located at 95 Bournais Drive. (Approximately 1.4kms (20 minutes)
each direction.
- Monitor participants while on the playground until the school bell rings.
- Respect and maintain confidentiality.
- Ensure participants are following all safety protocols.
- Provide support with problem solving and emotional regulation and guidance with
children experiencing difficult behaviours to help build on their strengths and enhance
their coping skills.

**Time Requirement**
- 1 hour per day 8:00-9:00am
- Commitment to program: Minimum 1 school year
- Start date: ASAP until June 30, 2025
- No walk during school closures: PD days, Winter Break, Spring Break etc.
- Walk to school 1.4 kms (Approx 20 minutes); Walk back to centre 1.4 kms (Approx 20 minutes) Total
walk: 2.8 kms (Approx 40 minutes).
Skills and Qualification

**Essential**
- Must be able to walk minimum 45-60 minutes
- All staff and volunteers are required to provide a satisfactory criminal record check including
vulnerable sector search and child abuse check.
- Ability to develop trusting relationships with children and youth and nurture healthy relationships between them and their peers.

**Desirable**
- Knowledge and understanding of working with children with behavioural needs such as
individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD
- Knowledge in de-escalation and self-regulation techniques

**Skills Gained**:

- Community development and awareness
- Understand and assist with decreasing community barriers to accessing services and
resources.

**Working Conditions**
- Outdoor conditions, various temperatures.
