Compensation Range

$10,429.92 - $16,272.67 CAD Monthly

The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Organizational Status

The Investigator reports to the Director of Investigations. The Investigator carries a high level of responsibility in the UBC Community, making difficult decisions in matters impacting students, faculty and staff. The Investigator must display diplomacy and tact at all times, including when engaging with other UBC offices and personnel, including senior leaders in the VP-Students and VP- Human Resources portfolios at both UBC-V and UBC-O.

Work Performed
- Conducts investigations as assigned by the Director of Investigations, including:
- Collecting evidence, including interviewing parties and relevant witnesses using a trauma-informed approach- Making findings of fact-
- Preparing written investigation reports
- Liaises and corresponds with all involved parties (including union and other representatives, as applicable) to gather information for investigations
- Responds to complaints and investigation-related inquiries from internal and external parties
- Conducts alternative resolution processes, where appropriate
- Collaborates with other UBC IO staff in communications, education, analysis and administrative support in development and review of IO internal processes and procedures
- Attends meetings for policy oversight and review, within the IO and with stakeholders as needed and/or requested by the Director
- Works in cooperation with law enforcement agencies, regulatory bodies, third parties, and federal and provincial agencies as required

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The incumbent is in a high-level position of responsibility and trust, receiving highly sensitive and confidential information. Sound judgment and sensitivity are imperative to engender confidence in the credibility and integrity of the complaint and investigation process. The incumbent is expected to exercise sound judgement and maintain strict confidentiality. The potential for negative impact on the University is significant. Error in judgement or procedure could lead to serious legal consequences and could result in the University's failure to comply with federal and provincial human rights legislation.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, JD or equivalent is acceptable. Minimum of nine years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications- Relevant degree disciplines include law, social work or social sciences.-
- Familiarity with administrative law, labour and employment law, and human rights law-
- Recent and significant experience in trauma-informed investigation approaches- Demonstrated ability to conduct investigations in complex environments- Strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills- High emotional intelligence and maturity- Effective organizational skills with ability to multi-task and prioritize to meet deadlines- Effective evaluating, problem solving, analyzing and decision-making skills- Attention to detail to achieve accuracy- Ability to deliver results under pressure- Proven intercultural competencies and an ability to effectively communicate and interact with members from diverse communities- Ability to work well as part of a small, diverse and specialized unit- Commitment to continuous se
