**Summer Camp Counsellor**
**Reports to: Summer Camp Coordinator**
**Type: Seasonal, Full-Time**
**Pay Scale: $18-22/hour depending on experience**

**Start Date: June 24, 2024**
**End Date: August 30, 2024**

**Hours: Mon-Fri, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM**
**Please note that additional training will be required in May/June, up to 15 days.**

**Community, culture, and competition. All in one boat. **The Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival Society (dba Dragon Boat BC) is the non-profit producer of North America’s flagship dragon boat festival, the Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival, and runs Dragon Zone Paddling Club. The Society also produces a series of races, cultural programming, and community initiatives centered around the traditional Chinese cultural sport of dragon boat. Through its All Access and youth programs, supported by the Milton K. Wong Legacy Project, the Society makes paddling experiences accessible regardless of any barriers to participation.

**Job Summary**
- Provide fun, engaging, and informative programming for campers ages 8 to 12
- Teach paddling fundamentals and safety, supervising day field trips, and ensuring the well being of all camp participants.
- Provide opportunities for campers to learn about the traditions behind dragon boat and explore the intersection of sport and culture.
- Assist in the program planning process, as well as participate in any training deemed necessary by the Summer Camp Coordinator.
- Setup and take down of all equipment used during camp sessions, and for providing regular reports and recommendations throughout the camp’s period of operation.

**Key Responsibilities**

Program Planning:

- Complete required external training courses and provide proof of completion prior to assigned deadline Assist in developing high quality creative and core programs that are fun, engaging, and age appropriate
- Review and familiarize yourself with program curriculums and training materials

Program Delivery:

- Provide clear and engaging instruction for paddling sessions on kayaks, paddleboards, dragon boats, and outrigger and flatwater canoes
- Supervise field trips to offsite locations
- Lead planned and on-the-spot creative activities
- Ensure the safety of all participants at all times and provide alternatives for accessibility needs as required
- Engage in positive behavioural management and resolve conflict as necessary Ensure availability of open communication between campers and counsellors Build and maintain a positive, inclusive, and supportive camp community

General:

- File accurate incident reports in a timely manner as necessary
- Maintain positive communications with parents/guardians with a high degree of confidentiality regarding personal information
- Submit regular reports to the Club Program Coordinator identifying areas of growth/concerns and results or updates for initiatives, projects, events, client concerns, risks, and registrations
- Complete miscellaneous tasks and jobs as assigned by supervisors
- Participate in additional training opportunities including: cultural training programs, sport development, learning programs and skill development clinics

**Skills/Experience**
- Prior paddling experience in kayak, stand up paddleboard, outrigger/sprint canoe, flatwater boats, or dragon boat is required.
- Prior experience working or volunteering with children in a recreational setting (summer camp, day care, after school program, sport coaching, tutoring, etc.) is required.
- Prior experience in pool or waterfront lifeguarding is a strong asset. Bronze Cross/National Lifeguard certifications are strongly preferred.
- Post-secondary education in recreation management, sport coaching, kinesiology, early childhood education, developmental psychology, or related fields is a strong asset.
- Multilingualism is a strong asset.

**Certifications**
- Standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED
- NCCP Safe Sport Coaching Certificate, Canoe/Kayak
- Pleasure Craft Operator Card
- Police reference check (vulnerable sector)
