Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Environmental Services Facility (ESF) Technician 3 performs various technical tasks to assure the proper processing and disposal of chemical waste generated from University laboratories on
- and off-campus.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Director, Environmental Protection and works under general supervision of the Research Asst/Tech 5.

Work Performed

Under mínimal supervision, utilizing professional judgement, initiative and responsibility, the Technician 3 completes the following tasks:
- Primarily assists with overseeing the established University chemical waste disposal process, including the classification, verification and segregation of chemical waste for safe storage pending final disposal, chemicals lab packing activities, coordination and liaising with disposal contractors, record-keeping, and operational/compliance reporting in accordance with the British Columbia Hazardous Waste Regulations and the federal Transportation of Dangerous Goods legislation.- Coordinates the disposal of high-risk hazardous waste (explosives and potentially explosive, lecture bottles and unknowns) through approved hazardous waste contractors.- Coordinates the disposal of hazardous waste from off-campus research facilities at Hospital sites- Shares responsibility in the administration of the Hazardous Waste Inventory System (HWIS) databases for both the Point Grey campus and off-site Hospitals) to ensure the verification and approval of waste classifications and pick-up requests from laboratories and supporting database users. Identifies database anomalies that must be reported to IT support.- Provides technical support and consultation to UBC hazardous waste generators regarding chemical waste handling, packaging and disposal issues. Ability to trouble-shoot issues (or use proper judgement on when to escalate to supervisor) until adequate resolution.- Completes and retains waste manifests. Ensures compliant manifest record keeping and information tracking for Environmental Services Facility (ESF) manifests logs.- Carries out regular ESF site inspections for chemicals storage areas in accordance with regulations and to ensure safety and compliance.- Participates in the implementation of other waste management projects and initiatives, as required.- Provides training to faculty/staff/students, new and lower level technicians in the use of HWIS, equipment, techniques and procedures, as necessary.- Organizes temporary storage and packaging for disposal shipments, where required.- Provides relief job coverage for other technicians, as temporarily assigned. This may include verification, segregation, and processing (e.g. weighing, scanning, packaging, and safe storage) of other waste types (e.g. biomedical waste, batteries, oil, asbestos) pending final pick-up by disposal contractors.- Performs other tasks and related duties as directed.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position is responsible for ensuring operational and regulatory compliance with established guidelines and environmental regulations. The consequence of a wrong decision or lack of action could result in serious injury or damage to the University community, its property, or reputation; or result in failure of the University to comply with federal, provincial or municipal regulations.

Supervision Received

Works under general supervision; receives detailed work instructions on the assignments of new duties from the Research Asst/Tech 5 and the Advisor, Environmental Protection, and thereafter only on new or unusual problems.

No supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
