Job Summary

The Research Assistant will assist with research activities involved in studies investigating cognitive functioning in psychosis and mood disorders.

Organizational Status

The Research Assistant will report to the PI, Dr. Ivan Torres. The Research Assistant also interacts with other research, clinical and professional staff in the Psychiatry Department at UBC Hospital.

Work Performed- Assists with development of cognitive tasks for experiments, including searching for existing measures from the literature, purchasing existing neuropsychological tests, or interfacing with other researchers to utilize relevant tasks from other labs.- Assists PI to write protocol material (e.g. consents, ethics, protocols, patient information sheets).- Assists with preparing data for presentations using Powerpoint software.- Maintains research database using Microsoft Excel and SPSS software.- Performs data entry.- Maintains and checks database for accuracy.- Prepares reports from research database, including summaries of variables and number of cases with useable data.- Assists with basic statistical analyses using SPSS.- Completes literature reviews and internet and library article searches.- Assists w/ grant preparations, including helping with literature reviews and creating tables and appendices.- Assists with development of cognitive tasks for experiments, including searching for existing measures from the literature, purchasing existing neuropsychological tests, or interfacing with other researchers to utilize relevant tasks from other labs.- Assists PI to write protocol material (e.g. consents, ethics, protocols, patient information sheets).- Assists with preparing data for presentations using Powerpoint software.- Contribute to writing manuscripts and publications. Tasks may include conducting literature searches, assisting with data analysis, creating figures and tables, and other related duties.- Performs other related duties as required.

MAY ALSO PERFORM- Administers neuropsychological and other cognitive tests to research participants and scores against established scale.-
- Administers structured clinical interviews.-
- Obtains informed consent for studies.- Monitors and tracks research budgets and accounts.- Purchases equipment and materials.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position works according to existing procedures and study protocol, but is expected to define their own priorities and exercise independent judgement in carrying out tasks; new or unusual problems are referred to the supervisor. The incumbent is expected to be independently motivated and exceptionally organized. Any errors in data preparation or tracking will harm the projects.

Supervision Received

This position works under general supervision provided by the principal investigator, carrying out familiar duties. Detailed instruction would be given on new processes and unfamiliar tasks.

Supervision Given

This position may involve supervision of one or two staff at a lower classification or students, and may initiate new employees into lab procedures and routines.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications- University degree or other post-secondary education in Psychology or a related field would be an asset- Experience in a clinical research environment would be preferred.- Experience and familiarity with neuropsychological tests, psychiatric questionnaires and interviews- Demonstrated experience with computers and computer software including MS Word for Windows, MS Excel, Power Point, SPSS, as well as other psychological software- Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills- Accuracy and attention to detail- Ability to multi-task and prioritize work to meet deadlines- Ability to work independently and within a team environment
