Climbing Wall Lead

Reporting to the Parks, Arenas, and Aquatics Manager or their designate, the Climbing Wall Lead is
responsible for managing the climbing wall at the Kenn Borek Aquatic Centre. This position involves
maintaining the wall, cleaning, replacing, and sanitizing holds, and recommending and/or ordering
necessary parts and equipment. Additionally, the role includes organizing and conducting programs for
the wall at the centre.

**KEY DUTIES PERFORMED**:
1. Ensures that all climbers adhere to safety protocols, including proper harnessing, belaying, and use of

equipment.
2. Provides guidance and instruction to climbers of all skill levels, including proper climbing techniques,

movement skills, and route navigation.
3. Designs and set routes of varying difficulty levels to accommodate climbers with different skill levels

and to keep the climbing experience engaging.
4. Regularly inspects climbing equipment (such as harnesses, ropes, auto belays, and carabiners) to

ensure they are in proper working condition and arranging for repairs or replacements when
necessary.

5. Monitors climbers on the wall to prevent unsafe practices or behaviour and intervening if necessary
to ensure everyone's safety.

6. Creates and implements climbing programs, workshops, and clinics for individuals or groups
interested in improving their climbing skills.

7. Conducts risk assessments of the climbing wall and surrounding area to identify potential hazards and
implementing measures to mitigate risks.

8. Provides excellent customer service by assisting climbers with questions, offering encouragement and
support, and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.

9. Assists with the promotion and marketing of the climbing wall programs and events to attract new
climbers and retain existing ones.

10. Maintains accurate records of attendance, incidents, equipment inspections, and other relevant
information.

11. Stays informed about the latest trends, techniques, and safety standards in the climbing industry
through training, workshops, and professional development opportunities.

12. Develops and maintains procedures.
13. Implements and leads staff in-services and staff training on a regular basis.

14. May respond to emergencies, including assisting with rescues and administering first aid if needed.

**REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES & SKILLS**:
1. Minimum 19-years of age.
2. Climbing Wall Instructor Level 1 certification.
3. Current Standard First Aid certification.
4. Minimum 1-year climbing wall experience.
5. Experience providing instruction and leadership.
6. Compliance with and approval of Security/Reliability Clearance and Criminal Record Search.
7. The ability to perform all the duties outlined above in a safe manner following established Facilities

Procedures, Occupational Health and Safety rules, Violence in the Workplace policies and W.S.B.C.
Regulations (i.e., WHMIS).

**DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS**:
1. Climbing Wall Instructor Level 2 or 3.
