**Role and objectives**:
The Carpenter under the direction of Director, Innovation & Fabrication is responsible for building, restoring and/or installing structural woodwork and related materials. This position requires knowledge of the heavy construction industry. Specifically, the practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety associated with this industry. The Carpenter must be proficient at the following tasks: rigging CLT panels and glulam beams, installing timber fasteners and bolts, placing windows and doors, stain-grade trim work, layout, reading blueprints, and must possess mathematical and analytical skills necessary to do material estimates.
**Responsibilities**:
- Assist with the creation of blueprints and manufacturing specifications.
- Rigging CLT and glulam beams with cranes and forklifts
- Use of power tools like drills, saws, routers
- Installing insulation and membranes
- Observe and comply with all health and safety regulations and ensure any apprentices under your direction comply.
- Lay building foundations.
- Confirm trueness of structures, with a plumb bob and level.
- Framing including doors and windows.
- May be required to build trestles, bridges towers and other structures.
- Operate and maintain carpentry tools and equipment.
- Keep a daily log of tasks.
- Respect and respond to direction given.
- Contribute and participate in the effective use of the Quality Control System.
- Prepare estimates for work orders and request materials required to complete the job.
- Ensure an adequate supply of material is available for the preventative maintenance program.
- Set up scaffolding as needed.
- Handle and transport job materials to the work area as needed.
- Guide and teach apprentices ensuring they are performing tasks correctly.
- Perform other related duties, including minor duties of other trades where certification is not required, and the work does not exceed own limitations.
- Understand and comply with all company policies and procedures.
- Other duties as required.
**Requirements**:
- Current Journeyman's Carpenter's Certificate is considered an asset
- (3) years of experience as a Carpenter.
- (2) years of experience working in heavy construction.
- Currently working in the trade.
- Knowledge of safe operation of carpentry tools.
- Knowledge of workplace safety and safe lifting and handling procedures.
- Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
- Time management skills.
- Ability to read building specifications, blueprints, and as-builds.
- Ability to draw appropriate sketches to communicate details to team members, and others.
- Mathematical skills and analytical skills necessary to do material and labour estimates.
- Receptive to change - can adapt to changing circumstances.
- Makes suggestions for improvement.
- Proactive in ensuring job knowledge is current.
- Respect diversity - treat others with respect.
