The Manitoba Geological Survey, Resource Development Division facilitates sustainable development of the province’s mineral, petroleum and pore-space resources. The Geological Survey Branch conducts a wide range of investigations, which include the examination of exposed bedrock, subsurface materials, and surficial sediments including sand, gravel and organic deposits throughout Manitoba. The branch provides data and products, such as geological maps and reports, metallic and industrial mineral deposit reports and databases, mineral resource assessments, targeted geoscience research, development of exploration models, and maintenance of data inventories. By developing an understanding of Manitoba's geology and geological processes, the Geological Survey Branch promotes mineral exploration opportunities and contributes to wise land-use management.

Conditions of Employment:

- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Physically capable of conducting geological field work, including walking on rough terrain and slopes, carrying heavy (up to 50 lbs) equipment and samples, setting up and operating boats, and driving trucks and ATVs in off road areas.
- Must be willing and able to work overtime when required and work out-of-town with overnight accommodations in bunkhouses, hotels and tents.
- Must have a valid Manitoba Class 5 Drivers License.
- Ability to visually identify colours of rocks in hand sample and thin section.

Qualifications:
**Essential**:

- Post-secondary education in geological sciences, geology or earth sciences or an equivalent combination of education and geology-related experience may be considered.
- Experience in geological interpretation of geological samples and maps.
- Knowledge of geological survey methods and laboratory techniques.
- Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
- Experience using ESRI ArcGIS, or similar GIS software programs.
- Excellent written communication skills with demonstrated ability to draft and write reports.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and maintain effective co-operative working relationships with a variety of groups.

**Desired**:

- Experience using Adobe Illustrator or similar graphic software programs.

**Duties**:
This position will assist senior geologists with the collection, collation, and compilation of geological and geophysical data of various types. The position may also conduct some field work under supervision. Project topics are variable and will cover all rock types and ages occurring in Manitoba. Assignments are under a limited scope and complexity, with some broad interpretations of data required. The geological assistant position will work under the direct supervision of the Chief Geologist and other chief/senior geologists as needed and assigned.
