THE OPPORTUNITY
This position leads and implements the City offered quality programs within Program Portfolios (e.g., Camps, Youth, Arts & Culture, Drama, Sport) for various ages, abilities and interest, by delivering programs based on prepared lesson plans and itineraries. Through the delivery of programs, the incumbent provides positive experiences for a variety of ages and abilities, through high standards of supervision, professional interaction, prioritizing safety and integrating creativity. Grounded in key principles and standards such as (but not limited to) High 5, Developmental Assets Framework, Fundamental Movement Skills, Creative Youth Development and Play work Principles.
The hourly rate for this seasonal position ranges from - $20.51 - $24.38.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Delivery
- Finalizes program plans and prepares all required supplies, equipment, and forms.
- Confirms special guests and field trip contacts.
- Provides high-quality programs that meet identified program outcomes, standards, and requirements.
- Creates and fosters a safe, welcoming environment for all participants, their parents/guardians and other contributors.
- Leads program participants and other volunteers or subordinate staff in a professional, safe, and engaging manner.
- Ensures a safe, clean programming space, prior, during and following a program.
- Successfully completes pre-program training courses
- Supports assigned programs or events (i.e., Canada Day and other special events).
- Represents the City through expected behaviours and standards, including uniforms and identification.
Administration & Program Support
- Completes all required forms, reports, and other administrative tasks.
- Completes required janitorial and cleaning of workspaces.
- Supports the Program Coordinator(s).
Other Duties
- Understands and adhere to the City policies, procedures, and standards, whether written or implied.
- Contributes to a positive safety culture by acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies and procedures for staff and contractors.
- Acts as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the “Values, We Live By”.
- Performs other job-related duties as required.
Program Portfolios are as follows:
- Adventure Camp (1): Adventure Camp is a weeklong registered day camp for children ages 6-12 with a new theme each week (i.e. sports, science, nature, or challenges).
- Pop Up Playground / Leaders in Training (1):
- Pop Up Playground is a free drop-in program for children that rotates through various park spaces in Spruce Grove with outdoor recreational activities to develop life skills and leadership through games, sports, crafts, and special events.
- Youth Volunteer and Mentorship Program, Leaders in Training, which involves training and supervision of our teen volunteers.
- Art Explorer Camp (1): Art Explorer is a weeklong registered day camp for ages 6-14 that will explore a new art medium each week.
- Youth Programs (1): Free drop-in summer programming for youth ages 12-18. Recreation activities such as games, crafts, music, and art experiences are planned to develop life skills and a sense of community belonging.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Secondary School Diploma.
- Enrolled in a Post-Secondary institution in a related field (education, recreation/kinesiology, fine arts, social work, etc).
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in child/youth related program delivery.
- Basic knowledge of the benefits and principles of arts, culture, recreation, physical literacy, and/or fundamental movement skills.
- Knowledge of recreation and culture program objectives for children and youth.
- Knowledge of emergency management procedures.
- Knowledge in the principles of inclusion and diversity, including but not limited to, LGTBQ+, First Nations, special needs.
- Ability to instruct, organize and supervise group activities for youth/teens and younger children in a respectful and fun manner.
- Skilled in the use of material and equipment used in a variety of children and youth programs.
- Skilled in the delivery of activities in one or more of the following areas - recreation, sport, performing or visual arts & crafts, games & children’s songs.
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to effectively communicate.
