**VISD-2003** **-**501**:Material Arts: Ancient-Modern** (**0.5** credit)**

( _Winter_ _Semester: _January 4, 2024_ - _April 4, 2024_; _Wednesday_; _6:30 PM - 9:30 PM_; _In-Person_)_

**COURSE DESCRIPTION**:
This course surveys human-made things across time. It is concerned both with historical change and the social, economic, ideological and aesthetic contexts of materiality, invention, fabrication and use. Acknowledging the problematic category of the decorative arts, this course considers the development of ceramics, glass, têxtiles and metal work across time - from the ancients worlds to the contemporary one - in an effort to understand why things are made and how, and how they are used and why. Operating as a study of "material culture," the course interrogates what is called craft but does so within the larger frame of social existence.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Teaching and teaching-related responsibilities may include but are not limited to: course outline development, studio preparation and delivery inclusive of lectures, critiques, grading, mid-term evaluations and final evaluations/reviews; including responsibility for health & safety and meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- The successful applicant should have a terminal degree in art, design or relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience
- Experience teaching at the post secondary level is considered an asset, equivalent relevant experience will be considered
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated leadership and experience promoting a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty
