**JOB DESCRIPTION**:
The Student Issues and Advocacy Coordinator acts as the Toronto Metropolitan Students’ Union (TMSU) lead advocate for students, including, but not limited to, Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) appeal process and other academic issues, as directed by Management, which seek to improve the quality of and access to education at TMU

**RESPONSABILITIES**
- Provides strategic advice to students on a wide variety of administrative petitions, academic and non-academic issues, including but not limited to accommodations and complaints.
- Represent students in investigative meetings, both academic and non-academic and, attends appeal hearings at all levels within the university.
- Drafts academic appeals, undertakes research, and prepares students for oral hearings and meetings.
- Administers drop-in hours and scheduling of appointments to advise students.
- Develops and delivers workshops in collaboration with other departments related to academic appeals, student rights, and human rights.
- Participates in university policy committees as a member wherever possible.
- Researches issues related to quality of education, student rights, and assists with the development of research documents.
- Identifies systemic issues that affect student academic success.
- Assists students and faculty resolving academic and non-academic issues informally.
- Provides advice and referrals to university student services and student affairs to ensure student success, including and not limited to academic accommodations and wellness programs.
- Assists students with the interpretation university policy, procedures, and processes.
- Works closely with university faculty, staff, and students.
- Undertakes other duties as needed.

**QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE**:

- A minimum of 3 years’ experience supporting and advocating for students with a wide variety of issues in post-secondary educational settings.
- Thorough knowledge of procedural fairness, administrative law, and due process rights.
- Experience resolving complex education issues, drafting academic appeals, analyzing evidence, attending academic appeal oral hearings, conducting legal research, and interpreting university substantive policy and procedures.
- Ability to manage a high-volume, complex, and diverse caseload of academic and non-academic issues.
- Results-oriented and able to resolve issues informally and quickly where appropriate.
- Familiarity with university structure and governance is considered an asset.
- Background in law or studying law would be an asset

**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent

**Salary**: $61,530.18 per year
