**Class Schedule**: Tues. Thur, 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm (If these days don't work for you, we can change the schedule
to Monday & Wednesday instead. )

**Class Format**: In-person/Online

Healthy Commutes (AHC) provides a perfect opportunity for you to meet your needs. Welcome to join us as a
volunteer English instructor to teach our adult newcomer learners.

Background
The Action for Healthy Communities (AHC) has been a non-profit charitable organization operating in Alberta
since 1995, dedicated to enhancing community capacity and fostering healthier, stronger communities. The
primary objective of AHC is to improve the lives of individuals and communities by providing public education
and facilitating other capacity-building initiatives. These efforts empower individuals to enhance their own
lives.

Key Responsibilities
1. Curriculum Development & Planning
- Plan lessons for each class based on the provided curriculum and students’ needs.
- Incorporate visual and audio-visual resources into the lessons, allowing the students to develop their

English communication skills.
- Locate and utilize ESL teaching resources to enrich the lessons.

2. Teaching English as a second language (ESL)
- Teach ESL during the scheduled class time according to the curriculum and lesson plans.
- Utilize teaching techniques and student-centred learning strategies to motivate students in learning,
- Create a welcoming, positive and encouraging learning atmosphere that promotes confidence-building.
- Offer opportunities for students to ask questions and request clarification on lessons and related
- Put language learning into practical use by encouraging conversations.

**Qualifications**:

- Currently taking or has a certificate in teaching English as a Second Language (TEFL, TESOL, CELTA,

etc.), or a degree in English or at least two years of experience teaching English to diverse populations.
- Excellent organizational skills and oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent cross-cultural awareness.
- Strong technology skills in PowerPoint, Internet, Zoom, Teams, etc., and willingness to learn.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, effectively and professionally.
- Able to commit for a minimum of 12 weeks.
