**Course Number and Title**:IRE2715HF Special Topics in IR&HR: The Climate Crisis and the Future of Work

**Course Description**:
Climate change represents an epochal change, exerting multiple disruptive effects on economic activity, jobs, human health, and well-being - in Canada and around the world. At the same time, energy transitions and decarbonization strategies require significant adjustments throughout the economy and society. Yet, the world of work appears ill-prepared to address either of these challenges. This course addresses the key drivers of global warming, and how workers and unions are currently tied to systems that are destroying the earth’s climate. It also considers the proposals for a ‘Green New Deal’ - new policies and investments that aim to achieve environmental sustainability, economic stability, and equality. The course concludes by examining how new political alliances between labour, citizens, and environmental actors (or ‘blue-green alliances’) are currently being forged to advance public policies that meet the scale and urgency of the climate crisis in Canada and the world.

**Schedule**:
Mondays and Wednesdays, 15:00-18:00 (three-hour class, condensed course)
- This course is scheduled to be delivered in person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the University or the Centre.

**Sessional Dates**: May 1, 2023 - June 30, 2023 (classes start May 8 and end June 5, 2023 - condensed course)

**Salary**:
Sessional Lecturer I - $9,182.42

Sessional Lecturer I (Long Term) - $9,641.55

Sessional Lecturer II - $9,826.96

Sessional Lecturer II (Long Term) - $10,025.84

Sessional Lecturer III - $10,060.93

Sessional Lecturer III (Long Term) - $10,262.15

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement should prevail.

**Minimum Qualifications**: Completed Ph.D. in Industrial Relations, Human Resources, or related discipline; or a combination of advanced degrees (e.g.MIRHR/MBA/LLB in applicable area) and equivalent professional background.

**Description of Duties**: Prepare a course syllabus in accordance with departmental guidelines. Prepare and deliver lectures (24 contact hours as indicated above); be available for office hours and informal communications with students. Assess and evaluate students' work and provide final course grades in accordance with university and department practices.
