SUMMER STUDENT/YOUTH WORKER

The Parks Department is responsible for developing and maintaining the various parks, trails, and greenspaces in and around the Village. The Public Works Department develops and maintains the Village’s roads, utilities, right-of-ways, and other infrastructure and services. Both departments routinely collaborate on shared projects and both positions will be exposed to a variety of work environments. We are seeking energetic applicants who are comfortable working individually or within a team and are willing to learn new skills that are important to the day-to-day operations of a small but vibrant community.

Applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 30 as per the Canada Summer Jobs Grant. The successful applicants will also be required to have a valid driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract. Backgrounds in the following will be considered an asset, but we encourage all to apply:

- Landscaping and operation of small power equipment related to lawn care
- General construction with an awareness of safe working practices
- Operation of small utility vehicles
- First aid training of any kind (OFA Level 1 First Aid preferred)
- Experience working in a public setting, with strong interpersonal skills

Reporting to the Parks, Trails, and Lands Supervisor and/or the Public Works Operations Foreman, summer Student/Youth Worker positions are responsible for a variety of tasks in support of Cumberland’s Parks and Public Works departments. The Student/Youth Worker completes general duties related to the maintenance, operations, and development of parks, roads, utilities, natural areas, and other municipal grounds.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Student/Youth Worker, while working under direct supervision, within a team, or
independently will complete duties in a diligent and timely manner. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Parks and Grounds
- Maintains municipal lawns, gardens, and natural areas by grass cutting, watering, litter picking, and performing other general grounds maintenance activities
- Assists in the construction and maintenance of municipal trails and greenways infrastructure, and may perform basic inspection and mapping of these assets
- Safely operates a variety of equipment including ride-on mowers, line trimmers, backpack leaf blowers, and hedgers
- Performs necessary inspection of small equipment and performs simple maintenance as required. Reports major maintenance and servicing requirements to their supervisor
- Carries out safe work practices and adheres to safety and other work-related regulations
- Undertakes other related duties and projects as assigned

Public Works and Operations
- Assists in the maintenance and construction of various aspects of Village operations. Including, but not limited to:

- Utility corridor management
- Streets, lanes, boulevards, and sidewalks
- Litter collection and disposal
- Other civic grounds and facilities
- Safely operates a variety of equipment including vehicles, mowers, line trimmers, backpack leaf blowers, and hedgers
- Performs necessary inspection of small equipment being operated and performs simple maintenance as required, including reporting maintenance and servicing requirements to their supervisor
- Performs basic carpentry tasks, including use of saws and drills
- Carries out safe work practices and adheres to safety and other work-related regulations
- Undertakes other related duties and projects as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Completion of Grade 12, or equivalency
- Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period, and be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, per the requirements of the Canada Summer Jobs Grant.

Experience
- General landscaping and grounds maintenance practices
- General construction and safety practices
- Working in a public setting
REQUIRED LICENSES
- Valid Driver’s License
- Clear Driver’s abstract

**Job Types**: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 4 months

**Salary**: $20.20 per hour
